Genetic parameters for fertility traits in Nellore bulls

Abstract: Nellore is the main cattle breed used in Brazil, being the largest commercial herd in the world. Beyond the importance of male reproductive efficiency for farm profit, the use of reproductive techniques, mainly artificial insemination, turns the evaluation of male reproductive traits even more important. Estimation of genetic parameters increases the knowledge on traits variances and allows envisaging the possibility of the inclusion of new traits as selection criterion. Genetic parameters for fifteen traits t… Show more

“…In Brazilian beef cattle, the most commonly used trait as an indicator of fertility and sexual precocity is the scrotal perimeter (SP), which is easy to measure and exhibits a positive genetic correlation with testicular biometry traits (e.g., length, width, and testicular volume), sperm motility and mass activity and a negative genetic correlation with major and total sperm defects [7]. Additionally, age at first calving (AFC) is highly correlated with fertility and reproductive efficiency in both beef and dairy cattle, thus affecting heifer precocity [8,9].…”

“…However, Zebu ( Bos taurus indicus ) typically starts puberty around 18 months, with an average SC of 28 cm, indicating slightly lower fertility rates [ 4 ]. A study including 609 Nellore bulls reported averages of 12.00 cm for length and 7.00 cm for the width of testicle biometrical measurements [ 15 ]. Another study evaluating 15,313 Nellore bulls measured at 22 months, reported averages of 0.36 dm 3 for TV [ 27 ].…”

“…However, the development and regulation of the animal reproductive system are a complicated process, and the molecular mechanisms of traditional breeding are poorly understood and merit further study. The quality of sperm, such as sperm count, sperm concentration, progressive motility and deformity rate, cannot be directly selected because of low heritability (Carvalho Filho et al, ). Over the past few decades, a variety of heritable variations have been considered as potential genetic codes to understand the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes.…”
