Genetic Mapping and Confirmation of Quantitative Trait Loci for Seed Protein and Oil Contents and Seed Weight in Soybean

Abstract: Demand for soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] meal has increased worldwide and soybean importers often offer premiums for soybean containing higher contents of protein and oil. Objectives were to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with soybean seed protein, oil, and seed weight in a soybean mapping population and confirm detected QTL across genetic backgrounds and environments. Two populations of 216 and 156 recombinant inbred lines were developed from Magellan × PI 438489B and Magellan × PI 567516C… Show more

“…This is not unexpected as there is a long-established negative correlation between oil and protein content in soybean seed with correlation coefficients ranging from À0.18 to À0.67 (e.g. Johnson and Bernard 1962, Wilcox 1998, Yaklich et al 2002, Shi et al 2010, Pathan et al 2013). This study also reported a strong, negative correlation of À0.82 between seed oil and protein content.…”

“…The QTL from PI407788A was mapped by Kim et al (2015), but multiple seed composition QTL have been mapped to this location prior to and following that study (Diers et al, 1992;Sebolt et al, 2000;Fasoula et al, 2004;Pathan et al, 2013;Bandillo et al, 2015;Phansak et al, 2016;Qi et al, 2016). “…QTL are reported for traits related to weight and size of the seeds (Liu et al 2011, Xu et al 2011, Han et al 2012, Sun et al 2012, Hu et al 2013, Liu et al 2013, Pathan et al 2013, Yesudas et al 2013, Kato et al 2014. Moreover, at least six QTL have been reported for grain yield, specifically (Palomeque et al 2009, Sebastian et al 2010, Kim et al 2012, Fox et al 2015, besides the several QTL mapped for other grain yield components from different populations , Guzman et al 2007, Zhang et al 2010, Liu et al 2011, Liu et al 2013.…”
