Genetic Enhancement and Genetic Analysis of Resistance to Asian Soybean Rust in India

Abstract: Background: Asian soybean rust caused by PhakopsorapachyrhiziSyd. is a major threat for production and expansion of soybean in India. Understanding the nature of inheritance of rust resistance in DSb 21 will help in estimating the number of genes involved in governing the resistance mechanism and thus will be helpful in designing a suitable breeding method. Methods: Utilizing JS 335 and EC 241778, in a long term breeding programme, a highly rust resistant variety, DSb 21 has been released from University of Ag… Show more

“…In another study conducted during the Kharif season of 2008 in Dharwad, India, 84 soybean genotypes were tested for ASR resistance in natural epiphytic environments, and these two germplasm lines (EC-241778 and EC-241780) were found as resistant genotypes ( Khan and Tyagi, 2013 ). However, the first rust-resistant cultivar developed in India is DSb 21 (JS 335 × EC 241778), which was developed by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, and released in 2015 ( Immadi et al, 2022 ). Apart from demonstrating resistance to ASR, DSb 21 also yields 10–12% more than the popular cultivar JS 335.…”

“…Soybean is mainly grown for their seeds and it is the second largest oil seed after groundnut in India. Soybean seeds contain 43.2% protein, 19.5% fat, 20.9% carbohydrate and a good amount of other nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, iron and vitamins (Gupta et al, 2003 andImmadi et al, 2021). In India it is grown over an area of 11.44 million hectare with a production of 12.04 million ton nes an d average p roductivity of 10 50 kg ha -1 (Anonymous, 2022).…”
