This study aimed to analyze the leaf anatomy of Manihot caerulescens, with emphasis on the ontogeny and secretion composition of the laticifers. Leaf samples were submitted the usual techniques in plant anatomy and histochemical tests to identify the main classes of secondary metabolites. The analyzes were performed using light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaves have a single layered epidermis coated by a uniform cuticle. The epidermal cells are elongated and papillose on the leaf abaxial surface of leaves. The mesophyll is isobilateral and the vascular bundle of the midrib is collateral. The laticifers are originated from ground meristem and procambium, and are of articulated anastomosing type. Besides the laticifers, two types of idioblasts were found: the secretory idioblasts, with a dense content, and the calcium oxalate druses idioblasts. Histochemical tests revealed different classes of chemicals for both secretory idioblasts and laticifers. In idioblasts, a positive reaction was detected for the general phenolic compounds, proteins, total polysaccharides and tannins. The laticifers reacted positively to total lipids and acids, essences, total polysaccharides and rubber. The individuals analyzed here are from caatinga and their leaf anatomical structure showed to be different from that described for the same species growing in the cerrado.

This study aimed at predicting and evaluating the variation in the amino acids of cassava roots from their crude protein. Nutrient composition of cassava roots were obtained from previous studies and descriptive statistics, correlations and prediction models were developed using stepwise multiple regression analyses. The results indicated that variations occurred among the amino acid content of cassava roots from different sources. The amino acid component with the highest coefficient of variance was Tryptophan (364.2 %) while the least was Alanine (38.41 %). Glutamine had the highest mean value (0.25 %) while the least value was Cysteine (0.01 %). Positive and negative correlations existed between the amino acid content at 1 and 5 % levels of significance. Equations generated for Total Essential Amino acid (TEA) and Total Amino Acid (TAA) revealed that r2 increased as the number of variables increased, Prediction equations generated values for TEA and TAA of cassava roots were much close to the actual values obtained.

ABSTRACT. Cassava periclinal cytochimeras, cultivars, and interspecific hybrid and polyploid types were studied in relation to embryonic, cytogenetic, and anatomical behavior. Their apical shoots, pollen grains, male and female buds, roots, stomata, and flowering period were analyzed. Chimeras exhibited increased size of L1 and L2 cells. Polyploidy led to enlargement of stomata in chimeras whereas L2 gave tetraploid chromosome configurations, tetrad irregularity, decrease of pollen viability, and increase in frequency of polyembryo sacs. The chimeric composition of tetraploids L1 and L2 and diploid L3 expressed a notable epigenetic effect seen in a marked enlargement of edible roots compared to total diploid. One of the chimeric types was accompanied by complete flowering inhibition. Pollen viability and diameter appeared to be reliable markers to determine ploidy levels.
