West Africa is a core producer of Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.), supplying 45% of the commodity on the global market. Despite this huge share of the international market, only 10% of the commodity is processed and consumed domestically. The low rate of consumption is reflected by low investment in the cashew industry, making the crop underutilised as a food and nutrition security crop in the region. The objective of this study was to analyse the trends in production, levels of consumption and export of the crop in West Africa, as a basis for informing strategic development interventions. This work utilised metadata from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation database, Nitidae and other relevant sources to explore the production, consumption and export patterns of cashew from the year 2000 up to 2017. The metadata used were analysed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that eleven (Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria, Benin, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Guinea, The Gambia, Senegal, and Togo) of the sixteen countries in West Africa were actively engaged in cashew production. It was also projected that production will decline in the next five years in countries such as Nigeria, Togo, Senegal, and Burkina Faso due to a reduction in the land under cashew cultivation, an increase in pest and disease infestations, coupled with a decline in genetic improvement and poor extension services. Production will remain stable in The Gambia and Guinea Bissau because most trees there are yet to hit the peak of production; and of reduced investment in research and development. Cashew consumption locally is dismal (<10% across the region) due to limited attention given to the processing industry in the region. To boost local production and consumption, as well maintain the 45% share of the international market in the next five years and beyond, it is essential to invest in genetic improvement, modification of agronomic practices, and investment in the processing industry, as well as research and development of the crop.

ABSTRAKJambu mete merupakan tanaman menyerbuk silang, yang biasa diperbanyak dengan biji. Salah satu upaya penyediaan tanaman agar sama sifatnya dengan induknya adalah dengan grafting. Oleh karena itu, dalam konservasi plasma nutfah jambu mete, tanaman hasil eksplorasi diperbanyak dengan cara grafting. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat keragaman tanaman hasil grafting 16 aksesi jambu mete asal Sulawesi Tenggara berdasarkan karakter morfologi. Penelitian dilakukan di Kebun Percobaan Cikampek, Januari sampai Desember 2015 dengan melakukan observasi langsung terhadap individu tanaman. Batang bawah yang digunakan adalah varietas B02, sedangkan batang atas adalah 16 aksesi hasil eksplorasi dari beberapa daerah di Sulawesi Tenggara. Pengamatan karakteristik morfologi secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif dilakukan terhadap tanaman hasil grafting umur 4 tahun. Tingkat keragaman 16 aksesi jambu mete asal Sulawesi Temggara bervariasi pada karakter bentuk daun, bentuk basal dan ujung daun, bentuk tajuk, arah percabangan serta warna daun muda dan tua. Karakter bentuk tepi daun, bentuk permukaan daun bagian atas dan bawah tidak bervariasi. Tingkat keragaman morfologi daun berkisar 67,18-87,59%, terbagi menjadi dua kelompok yang dipisahkan oleh karakter warna daun muda dan arah percabangan. Karakter tinggi tanaman, lebar tajuk, panjang daun, lebar daun, tebal daun, dan panjang tangkai daun sangat bervariasi. Tingkat keragaman berkisar antara 77,44-95,91% terbagi menjadi dua kelompok besar yang dipisahkan oleh karakter tinggi tanaman, panjang tangkai daun dan lebar tajuk. Karakter tinggi tanaman memisahkan 16 aksesi jambu mete dalam dua kelompok dengan koefisien keragaman 77,45-95,46%. Pada tahap selanjutnya perlu dilakukan observasi terhadap produksi gelondong, untuk menentukan korelasi antara pembeda pada sifat morfologi jambu mete dengan produksi gelondong.

Impact of COVID-19 on Cashew Price and Cashew Producers’ Income in Côte d’Ivoire: A Case Study in Five Departments

In Côte d’Ivoire, cashew has become an important cash crop. Nevertheless, Côte d’Ivoire’s cashew relies on the international market, with more than 90% of the production exported as raw nuts. The 2020 commercialization campaign started a few days after the outbreak of COVID-19 in China, which spread worldwide. This work assesses the impact of this pandemic on the cashew price and cashew producers’ income in Côte d’Ivoire. We used the cashew price database over ten weeks in five cashew production areas and an interview-guided to collect the data. We used the Producer Price Index (PPI), descriptive statistic, and theoretical analysis of the income forecasting for data analysis. Results reveal that the lack of funds resulting from the fear of investors has caused a gradual drop in prices since February. This decrease has been more severe when restriction measures have been enforced. The purchase of cashews even stopped in some localities of the study areas. Compared to the first week of the campaign, the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced cashew producer income hugely to 50% in the sixth week and to 37.5% in the ninth and tenth weeks of our observation. Nonetheless, institutional factors such as the lack of control have also contributed to prices decrease. As recommendations, in the short-run, some resilience strategies such as subsidizing the local cashew market should be set up by the authorities. In the mid-term, the country should strengthen the cashew commercialization chain. In long-run, the local cashew transformation should be prioritized instead of raw nuts commercialization.
