There is an increasingly demand for alternative vegetable oils sources. Over the last decade there has been fast growing interest in Moringa oleifera Lam., particularly due to its high seed oil yield (30-40%), while other Moringa species with similar potentialities are reducing their representativeness worldwide. This review reinforces the interesting composition of Moringa oil, rich in oleic acid and highly resistant to oxidation, for industrial purposes, and shows that other Moringa species could also be exploited for similar purposes. In particular, Moringa peregrina (Forssk.) Fiori has an interesting oil yield and higher resistance to pest and diseases, and Moringa stenopetala (Bak. f.) Cuf. is highlighted for its increased resistance to adverse climate conditions, of potential interest in a climate change scenario. Exploring adapted varieties or producing interspecies hybrids can create added value to these less explored species, while renewing attention to endangered species. Moringa seed oil can be extracted by conventional methods or using physical methods (pressing), creating diverse products from a compositional perspective, able to serve both the biodiesel and food industries.

This study was carried out in February 2019 at the laboratory; Department of Biology, College of Taymaa, Tabuk University. The numbers of germinated seeds were recorded daily after Soaking for two days during 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th days and final percentage calculated at the end of germination period. Germination percentage, radical length and vigor index values were calculated for the two studied species. The two species (S) under study, days of germination (D) and interaction between them showed highly significant (P < 0.01) for seed germination. Despite germination percentages being slightly higher at the 10th day and 15th day for M. oleifera than M. peregrina, the germination percentages recorded higher values at the 20th, 25th and 30th days for M. peregrina than M. oleifera. The highest seed germinated number recorded at 20th day and 15th day for M. peregrina and M. oleifera, respectively with significant differences between the numbers of germinated seed in two species. Generally, germination %, radical length and vigor index of M. peregrina recorded a higher value compared to M. oleifera. A total value of germination percentage (80.33% and 65.33%) was recorded for M. peregrina and M. oleifera seed after 20 days from germinating time, respectively.

Interactive effect of drought and sea water treatments on metabolic profile of two different Moringa species

Current study deals with the assessment of interactive effect of drought and sea water treatment on primary and secondary metabolic contents of Moringa peregrina and M. oleifera. Different intervals (2, 7 and 14days) of drought and alternating concentrations (0, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) of sea water were interactively integrated with both species of Moringa with three factorial arrangements in RCBD design. By following the set protocols the primary (sucrose, glucose, fructose, mannitol, raffinose, starch and proline) and secondary (phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids and tannins) metabolic contents were extracted. It was observed that with increasing levels of both drought and salinity a dynamic decline was noticed both in the concentration of primary and secondary metabolites. However this decline was more dynamic for M. oleifera as compared to M. peregrina. Besides a contrary trend was noticed for proline whose concentration was dramatically increased with increasing levels f both drought and salinity stress. Present study authenticates that both stresses negatively affect the primary and secondary metabolic processes of plant. Therefore, metabolite profiling for any plant can be considered as an important tool to monitor the consequences of abiotic stresses at molecular level.
