Genetic Diversity of Grasspea and Its Relative Species Revealed by SSR Markers

Abstract: The study of genetic diversity between Lathyrus sativus L. and its relative species may yield fundamental insights into evolutionary history and provide options to meet the challenge of climate changes. 30 SSR loci were employed to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of 283 individuals from wild and domesticated populations from Africa, Europe, Asia and ICARDA. The allele number per loci ranged from 3 to 14. The average gene diversity index and average polymorphism information content (PIC) w… Show more

“…When a binary data matrix was generated, the original document was converted with Popgene 1.31 for genetic diversity parameter calculation, including the calculation of observed heterozygosity (H O ) of polymorphic markers, Shannon's information index (I), and the observed number of alleles (N A ; Shen et al, 2010;Xiao et al, 2014;Yu and Cheng, 2014). The NTsys2.1 software was used to construct the principal component analysis (PCA), which presents the distribution of populations (Cameron et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2015). The unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averaging (UPGMA) dendrogram was constructed from the distance matrix imported from PowerMarker V3.25 using MEGA 4 (Sneath and Sokal, 1973;Nei and Takezaki, 1983;Tamura et al, 2007).…”

“…SSR is widespread throughout various eukaryotic genomes, and there are many reports [25][26][27] on the use of SSR to research species revolution and classification. As can be seen from dozens of species of animals and plants concerned, the SSR technique can quicken material classification and identification accurately.…”

“…Grass pea has a tremendous potential as a source of multiple stress-tolerant genes for general crop improvement with suitable breeding strategies (Hao et al 2017;Wang et al 2015). For example, donor germplasm with the desirable phenotypes can be used to form new breeding materials and available genomic tools can be applied to speed up the breeding process.…”
