Genetic Diversity of Bubalus bubalis in Germany and Global Relations of Its Genetic Background

Abstract: This is the first study to explore the genetic diversity and population structure of domestic water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in Germany and their potential relations to herds in other parts of Europe or worldwide. To this end, animals from different herds in Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary were genotyped and compared to genotypes from other populations with worldwide distribution and open to the public. The pilot study analyzed population structure, phylogenetic tree, and inbreeding events in our samp… Show more

“…Additionally, we considered one variant per 10 kb as the lower density limit and only one missing or heterozygous variant per run. Potential ROH hotspots were identified by selecting only genomic regions containing the most frequent (top 1%) variants in a run in the GWH population [44][45][46].…”

“…However, wide variations have been recorded with regards to buffalo milk composition. Several studies have monitored compositional changes over the years, finding that they are affected by a combination of environmental, nutritional, and genetic factors [1][2][3][4]10,19,20]. Compared to bovine milk, the high content of fat and protein [9] makes buffalo milk a very good raw material for processing, especially cheese making [21].…”

“…Domesticated buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are highly adaptable and multipurpose animals [1]. Buffalo rearing has been facilitated for its versatility, efficient use of low-quality and high-fiber diets [2], parasite resistance, good quality meat, and rich milk and milk products [3].…”

“…The normal colour of buffalo semen is creamy white with a clean aspect ( 29 ). The mean volume of the ejaculate in Romanian buffalos, already genetically characterized ( 30 ) was found to be 4.07 (± 0.02) mL ( 29 ), which is less than in other indigenous buffalo breeds: Banni 4.09 (± 1.59), Bhadawari 4.11 (± 1.57), Jaffarabadi 5.10 (± 1.80), Murrah 4.48 (± 1.87), Pandharpuri 4.79 (± 1.80), Surti 4.68 (± 1.73) ( 31 ). An important difference was observed between the sperm pH of Romanian buffalo ( 29 ) that was 5.81 (± 0.06) and the swamp buffalo bulls in Thailand which was 7 during winter and summer and 6.9 during the raining season ( 32 ).…”
