Thinopyrum bessarabicum (2n = 2x = 14, JJ or E(b)E(b)) is a valuable source of genes for bread wheat (2n = 6x = 42) improvement because of its salinity tolerance and disease resistance. Development of wheat-Th. bessarabicum translocation lines by backcrossing the amphiploid in the absence of the Ph1 gene (allowing intergenomic recombination) can assist its utilization in wheat improvement. In this study, six novel wheat-Th. bessarabicum translocation lines involving different chromosome segments (T4BS.4BL-4JL, T6BS.6BL-6JL, T5AS.5AL-5JL, T5DL.5DS-5JS, T2BS.2BL-2JL, and the whole arm translocation T1JS.1AL) were identified and characterized using genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). No background translocations between wheat genomes were observed. The involvement of five of the seven chromosomes and small terminal segments of Th. bessarabicum chromosome arm were important, contributing to both reduced linkage drag of the derived lines by minimizing agronomically deleterious genes from the alien species and high stability including transmission of the alien segment. All three wheat genomes were involved in the translocations with the alien chromosome, and GISH showed the Th. bessarabicum genome was more closely related to the D genome in wheat. All the introgression lines were disomic, stable, and with good morphological characters.

Sustainability assessment of food supply chains: an application to local and global bread in Italy

Over the 2000s', consumers' food purchases have been increasingly informed by supply chain-related issues, with growing concerns about the sustainability of chains differing for their geographical scope. As a result, short food supply chains and local food systems have risen to policymakers and food chain stakeholders' attention as more sustainable alternatives to mainstream food networks. However, associating food chain's geographical scope and sustainability performance may not be straightforward. This paper aims at shedding lights on the connection between geographical scope and sustainability by comparing and discussing 19 attributes owing to different sustainability dimensions. The analysis anchors on the wheat-to-bread chain, due to its global relevance. Bread is a worldwide staple food and wheat is (generally) a commodity traded globally. However, wheat processing often occurs locally and baking is influenced by local heritage and consumption patterns, particularly in the EU and in Italy, where gastronomy is culturally embedded. The paper identifies critical aspects and provides a qualitative assessment of the performances of local vs global wheat-to-bread chains. The assessment is carried out on Italian case studies.

Wheat landraces represent a large reservoir of genetic variation of various traits. In this study 28 entries from a collection of 40 maintained in AARI, Faisalabad initially collected from northern Pakistan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan) were evaluated for their genetic diversity using microsatellite (SSR) primers. The 40 entries comprised of landraces and earlier local cultivars (C numbers) with all possessing a spring growth habit. Major phonological and biotic stress passport data is on record. The morphological examination of these entries showed that those designated as T2, T3 (Triticum durum), T7 (T. sphaerococcum), T18 (T. aestivum) C-217 (C-516xC-591) and C-258 were agronomically elite as to plant habit. SSR primers amplified total 122 bands out of which 83 were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphism was 68%. XGWM-337 and XGWM-194 were found to be highly polymorphic. T7, T12 (T. aestivum) and C-258 were found to be genetically most diverse landraces using the SSR markers. The polymorphism indicator and phenology profile are the basis for selecting from these germplasm for adding diversity to wheat breeding programs nationally.
