Genetic diversity and population structure of Quercus fabri Hance in China revealed by genotyping‐by‐sequencing

Abstract: Analysis of genetic diversity and population structure among Quercus fabri populations is essential for the conservation and utilization of Q. fabri resources. Here, the genetic diversity and structure of 158 individuals from 13 natural populations of Quercus fabri in China were analyzed using genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS). A total of 459,564 high‐quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were obtained after filtration for subsequent analysis. Genetic structure analysis revealed that these individuals ca… Show more

“…The Quercus plant genus plays an important role in water conservation, soil and water conservation and ecological stability [ 31 ]. Quercus fabri Hance, Quercus serrata Thunb, Quercus acutissima Carruth and Quercus variabilis Bl are the dominant species in deciduous broad-leaved forests and mixed coniferous forests in temperate and warm temperate regions of China and are also the forest building blocks in most parts of the country [ 32 , 33 ]. Oak tree wood is dense and beautifully textured, resistant to wear and decay and is often used as a high-quality material for building and household purposes [ 34 ].…”

“…), flowering dogwood ( C. florida ), and oak ( Quercus spp.) (Li et al., 2023 ; Pais et al., 2020 ; Xiong et al., 2020 ). In the study reported here, we document the first population genetic analysis of S. ovata populations in the Cumberland Plateau and Great Smoky Mountain region of the southern United States achieved using a GBS approach (Narum et al., 2013 ).…”

“…Restriction site-associated DNA (RAD) is one of the most effective genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) methods that allow for extensive SNP discovery on the genome level ( Davey et al, 2011 ; Sonah et al, 2013 ; Puritz et al, 2014 ). It has been widely applied in population genetics for numerous model and non-model species (e.g., Wang et al, 2013 ; Luo et al, 2019 ; Feng et al, 2020 ; Xiong et al, 2020 ; Boukteb et al, 2021 ; Qiao et al, 2021 ). In particular, the UGbS-Flex (also denoted as SuperGBS) is a powerful tool for population genetic research with the ability to generate long reads (300–700 bp) and maximize SNP callings irrespective of the species ploidy level, breeding system, and reference genome availability ( Qi et al, 2018 ; Cheng et al, 2020 ).…”
