The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Rhynchophorinae), which is one of the most serious pests of palm plants, was first found in China in the city of Wenchang (Hainan Province) in the 1990s and has now expanded to South China, including Fujian Province. In this paper, we provide a genetic characterization and determine the genetic relationships among geographic populations of RPW in Fujian using microsatellite loci and cytochrome oxidase subunit Ι (COI) sequences. The results indicate a low‐level microsatellite diversity of RPW. Four genetic clusters of RPW were found in Fujian. No correlation was detected between the genetic and geographical distances in the microsatellite data. The mitochondrial COI sequence analyses revealed a high level of diversity in the Fujian populations. Eleven haplotypes were detected, and these included eight haplotypes that were different from those found earlier in Mediterranean, Middle East, Japanese, and other populations. Significant genetic variations were observed mainly within populations, both with microsatellites and with COI sequences. Low gene flow among the populations was observed. Our results indicate that the nuclear allelic diversity was low compared with the microsatellite results from populations in Wardan and Oman, but the mitochondrial diversity was not reduced to a similar extent. The low level of the genetic structure of RPW is related to the limited flight capacity of RPW and human‐aided dispersal rather than to the geographic distance.

The white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a serious pest of rice in Asia. However, little is known regarding the migration of this pest insect from the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Vietnam, into China’s Yunnan Province. To determine the migration patterns of S. furcifera in the GMS and putative secondary immigration inside China’s Yunnan Province, we investigated the population genetic diversity, genetic structure, and gene flow of 42 S. furcifera populations across the six countries in the GMS by intensive sampling using mitochondrial genes. Our study revealed the potential emigration of S. furcifera from the GMS consists primarily of three major sources: 1) the S. furcifera from Laos and Vietnam migrate into south and southeast Yunnan, where they proceed to further migrate into northeast and central Yunnan; 2) the S. furcifera from Myanmar migrate into west Yunnan, and/or central Yunnan, and/or northeast Yunnan; 3) the S. furcifera from Cambodia migrate into southwest Yunnan, where the populations can migrate further into central Yunnan. The new data will not only be helpful in predicting population dynamics of the planthopper, but will also aid in regional control programs for this economically important pest insect.

Frankliniella occidentalis is an economically important invasive pest worldwide, which can damage various horticultural crops and ornamental plants. F. occidentalis was first intercepted in Kunming, Yunnan province in 2000, and first reported to establish a population in Beijing, China in 2003. Since then, this pest is currently distributed across tens of provinces in mainland China and cause increasingly serious damage and loss. To control this pest, invasion biology, monitoring, and integrated pest management have been generally and intensively studied for 15 years in China. Furthermore, western flower thrips (WFT) as an important invasive insect pest, the research achievements on WFT has contributed to the promotion of technological innovation and development for invasive alien species management strategies and techniques in China. This review provides an overview for research on the biology, ecology, prevention, and management of this pest during 15 years in China. Meanwhile, China's "4E action" strategy on F. occidentalis is also discussed in this review.
