Genetic diversity and forest reproductive material - from seed source selection to planting

Abstract: Relation between genetic diversity and mass production of forest reproductive material is discussed in a holistic manner. In industrial forest plantations, narrow genetic diversity is desirable and reproductive material is produced at clone level. On the other hand, in conservation forestry a wide genetic diversity is imperative. Beside management goals, a desirable level of genetic diversity is related to rotation cycle and ontogeny of tree species. Risks of failure are lower in short rotations of fast growin… Show more

“…Robust models and tools are essentials to drive forest practice, forest management and the use and transfer of forest reproductive materials (Williams & Dumroese 2013). Even when gene pools are artificially moved or transferred (e.g., assisted gene flow or migration) the use of well-adapted seed and forest reproductive material is a fundamental issue under the projected climate change (Ivetić et al 2016). In this context, the conservation of MaPs and endemic species should be seen as a priority (Fady et al 2016).…”

“…A decrease in genetic variation has been correlated with the reduced adaptive flexibility, which threatens the ability of a species to survive via natural regeneration and has deleterious effects on the species fitness (Wang et al, 2011). Existence of large variations within a population increases chances that at least some individuals will be capable to adapt to new environmental conditions, allowing natural selection to result in adaptation (Ivetić et al, 2016). Therefore, the information on the genetic diversity or genetic structure in the remaining populations of endangered species is a prerequisite for the successful management and development of effective conservation strategies (Pospíšková & Šálková, 2006;Wang et al, 2011).…”

“…The level of genetic diversity in forest reproductive material depends in part on the level of genetic gain in the propagation material (Ivetić et al 2016). Genetic gain is increased by selection, which logically reduces the genetic diversity (Ruotsalainen 2014).…”
