T HE article is a review of new sheep breed for the regions with not friendly weather conditions likein the NorthWestern District of Russian Federation. The economic development of such region needs new resolves, and in agriculture areatoo. The represented breedhad beencreatedforincreasing meat resources, to borna local economically advantageousmeat-productive sheep breed. So it was made an improvement of the exterior and productive qualities of aboriginal Romanov sheep breed due to imported American Katahdin meat breeding muttons. It was applied the absorption cross-method at the first breeding stage. The next was a rigorous selection and drafting of the animal's desired type, identifying outstanding rams. Katumy sheep-breed was got up of reproductive breeding of the factory lines. New created-in sheep breed has a lot of advantages such as excellent fertility and meat increment, good herd instinct, and milkiness. All of thesemake Katumy sheep breed the best choice for agriculture in regions with severe conditions for manufacture and cattle breeding. It becomespossible to make breeding not only successful but faster and economically advantaged. Rams of Katumy meat-breed in the elite group have an average live weight of 105.53 kg; ewes were little lesser-70.03 kg. The ewes of the first and second classes haveweight growth up to 63.05 kg and 50.05 kg, respectively. Constitutional and productive features demonstrated in Katumy meat breed sheep had characterized by a large size, a strong and harmonious constitution with pronounced meaty forms. All of these represented facts give a possibility to rise and have a stable development of economically depressed regions.

Se analizó el pedigrí en diez razas de ovinos mediante parámetros genéticos poblacionales. Las poblaciones fueron Blackbelly (BBL; 19,695), Charollais (CHA; 5,033), Dorper (DOR; 42,171), Dorper Blanco (DOB; 4,213), Dorset (DOS; 5,557), Hampshire (HAM; 12,210), Katahdin (KAT; 77,955), Pelibuey (PEL; 42,256), Rambouillet (RAM; 11,951) y Suffolk (SUF; 14,099); nacidos de 1992 a 2018. Los análisis se realizaron con el software Endog. En padres conocidos, los valores oscilaron de 76.4 % (SUF) a 95.3 % (KAT), con promedio general de 86.0%, los animales con padres desconocidos correspondieron a los fundadores. La población consanguínea (como porcentaje de la población total) fluctuó del 12.3 % en DOS al 48.7 % en DOB, con promedio general de 29.7 %; la consanguinidad (F) promedio osciló de 3.9 (KAT) a 14.6 (DOB), con promedio general de 8.0. La evolución de F y sus componentes fue: en todas las poblaciones, la proporción de consanguíneos se incrementó (P<0.05); los niveles de relación genética (RG) son estables; y, la F presentó tendencias negativas (P<0.05). KAT, DOB y BBL con altas tasas de crecimiento en población consanguínea; DOB y DOS, DOB y CHA con los niveles más altos de F y RG, respectivamente. Seis poblaciones presentaron tamaño efectivo (Ne) mayor a 50; el resto presentaron Ne menor a 37, lo cual señala el estatus de cuidado para monitorear la evolución de F y sus posibles implicaciones. El intervalo generacional (IG) osciló de 3.0 a 4.15, con promedio general de 3.45 años, los mayores IG fueron para RAM y SUF, BBL y DOR con IG menores.

Genomic characterization and conservation of genetic diversity in cattle

Genetic diversity in livestock populations is important, because it forms the basis for these populations to adapt to changing environments and human demands. Traditionally, livestock genetic diversity has been characterized and conserved with pedigree-based measures of inbreeding and kinship. Thanks to the increasing availability of genomic information, in particular single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data, we now have additional opportunities to better manage genetic diversity. In this thesis, I utilized SNP data to characterize and conserve genetic diversity in Dutch cattle, both in in situ populations and ex situ gene bank collections. The Holstein Friesian (HF) breed was the main breed of interest, because of its importance in the Dutch and global dairy cattle sector. First, it was demonstrated how changes in breeding practices in the past have been accompanied by changes in genetic diversity trends in the Dutch-Flemish HF breeding program. Among others, it was shown that the introduction of genomic selection has been accompanied by an increase in pedigree-based and SNP-based rates of inbreeding and kinship. Second, the negative effects of inbreeding on performance ("inbreeding depression") were quantified for yield, fertility and udder health traits of Dutch HF cows. It was shown that recent inbreeding may be more harmful than ancient inbreeding, although results were mixed. It was also shown that, based on SNP data, the negative effects of inbreeding are quite equally distributed across the genome and well captured by genome-wide homozygosity. Third, the value of the Dutch cattle gene bank collection was demonstrated. It was shown that old HF gene bank bulls can be used in the current or future HF breeding program to increase (or recover) genetic diversity, or to improve genetic merit given a certain level of diversity. It was also shown that Dutch native breeds in the gene bank collection harbor genetic diversity, both within and across breeds, although some breeds showed substantial overlap. Last, it was discussed how genomic information (in particular SNP data) can be used to maintain genetic diversity in livestock populations. Based on our current knowledge and the availability of SNP data, I recommend to limit the increase in SNP-by-SNP similarity (and, thus, homozygosity) while performing selection. For gene bank collections, I envision a transition towards bio-digital resource centers, in which large amounts of genomic and phenotypic data are stored in addition to physical germplasm material. Overall, the findings of this thesis improve our understanding of (conservation of) genetic diversity in livestock and, thereby, contribute to sustainable livestock production.
