Diospyros kaki L. is one of the most important fruits in Taiwan. Cultivated D. kaki cultivars are classified into four types, according to their loss of astringency in ripening fruit and their change in flesh color, namely the Pollination-Constant Non-Astringent (PCNA), the Pollination Variant Non-Astringent (PVNA), the Pollination Variant Astringent (PVA) and the Pollination Constant Astringent (PCA). Recently, persimmon breeders are paying more attention to rootstock selection for successful grafting and agricultural production. To identify suitable rootstock and to trace the origins of extant native Diospyros species in Taiwan, the 10 known native Diospyros species together with four D. kaki cultivars were analyzed by using two low-copy, nuclear-encoded DNA markers, ncpGS and PHYA. There was moderate to strong support for the major nodes within the phylogenetic tree, obtained from both the Maximum-likelihood or the Bayesian inference methods. The constructed D. kaki phylogeny using Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Inference (BI) algorithms formed three clades. The most basal clade (clade A) comprised species distributed in the South East Asia , then species distributed in East Asia (clade B), and then D. kaki cultivars (clade C). The extant native Taiwan Diospyros species nested into clade A and B, suggesting a northward migration pattern of native Taiwan Diospyros species. In addition, the species D. oldhamii formed a sister clade with the D. kaki cultivars, suggesting that D. oldhamii may be a compatible rootstock. Lastly, D. kaki cultivars sampled from growers that were acquaintances formed corresponding subclades within clade C (C-1, C-2 and C-3), suggesting a high discrimination ability of the ncpGS and PHYA molecular markers used here.

Persimmon germplasm in the Western Caucasus represent one of the most northerly collections. In our study, 51 commercial cultivars of D. kaki, 3 accessions of D. virginiana and 57 D. lotus accessions from six geographically distant populations were investigated using 19 microsatellite and 10 inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. After STRUCTURE analysis, the single accessions of Diospyros were allocated to three genetic clusters. Genetic admixtures in the important genotypes of D. kaki were revealed, whereas D. lotus accessions showed no admixture with other genetic clusters. The correspondence of genetic data and phenotypical traits was estimated in the D. kaki collection. The most frost tolerant genotypes of the collection, such as “Mountain Rogers”, “Nikitskaya Bordovaya”, “Rossiyanka”, “MVG Omarova”, “Meader”, “Costata”, “BBG”, and “Jiro”, showed a high percentage of genetic admixtures and were grouped close to D. virginiana. Some of these genotypes are known to be interspecific hybrids with D. virginiana. A low level of genetic diversity between the distant D. lotus populations was revealed and it can be speculated that D. lotus was introduced to the Western Caucasus from a single germplasm source. These results are an important basis for the implementation of conservation measures, developing breeding strategies, and improving breeding efficiency.

The third and fourth countries in persimmon production are the Republic of Korea and Japan with a production of 346,479 and 208,000 tonnes, respectively. In the Republic of Korea, the non-astringent cultivar 'Fuyu' is the primary cultivar, which accounts for almost 82% of the total production, followed by 'Jiro' with 9.8% (Choi et al., 2014). In Japan, 'Fuyu' and the PVA cultivars 'Hiratanenashi' and 'Tonewase' are the three most important cultivars. Approximately 57% of the persimmon cultivated area is dedicated to these cultivars (Kono & Sato., 2016). In these two countries, the Republic of Korea and Japan, most persimmon production is consumed as dried fruit and is used in various types of cuisine and confectionery.Persimmon production in Azerbaijan, Brazil and Uzbekistan is 160,092 tonnes, 156,935 tonnes and 71,214 tonnes, respectively. Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan focus on local astringent varieties. In Brazil, the most cultivated varieties of persimmon are 'Rama forte' and 'Giombo', which belong to the PVA group. 'Taubate' (PCA) and cultivar 'Fuyu' are also cultivated in this country (Neuwald et al., 2009; Tessmer et al., 2014).In Italy, almost 90% of the total production is based on 'Kaki Tipo' (PVNA). The rest of the varieties are 'Vainiglia', 'Mercatelli', 'Moro' (PVNA), and PCNA cultivars like 'Gosho', 'Jiro' and cultivar 'Fuyu' (Bellini & Giordani, 2003). Moreover, the introduction of 'Rojo Brillante' has been the main innovation in the Italian persimmon production in recent years (Giordani, 2002; Bellini & Giordani, 2005).Nowadays, persimmon production in Israel has reached 28,000 tonnes, in which the cultivar 'Triumph' accounts for 90% of the total persimmon fruit marketed under the 'Sharon' or 'Sharoni' brands (Llácer & Badenes, 2002).Persimmon production in Iran is about 22,474 tonnes and most of the cultivars are astringent, which are commonly commercialized as over-ripened soft fruit in domestic markets (Shahkoomahally & Ramezanian, 2013; Bagheri et al., 2015).
