Genetic Divergence and Population Structure of Xanthomonas albilineans Strains Infecting Saccharum spp. Hybrid and Saccharum officinarum

Abstract: Leaf scald caused by Xanthomonas albilineans (Xa) is a major bacterial disease in sugarcane that represents a threat to the global sugar industry. Little is known about the population structure and genetic evolution of this pathogen. In this study, 39 Xa strains were collected from 6 provinces in China. Of these strains, 15 and 24 were isolated from Saccharum spp. hybrid and S. officinarum plants, respectively. Based on multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA), with five housekeeping genes, these strains were clust… Show more

“…However, the overall study's results show similar findings as those described in [47]. Overall, several agronomic and modern biotechnological approaches should be implanted through methodological measures to protect sugarcane plants aginst various biotic and abiotic stressors [48][49][50][51][52][53][54]. In addition, the findings of this study show that 110 kg ha −1 of polymer-coated SSP considerably increased the sugarcane yield along with 18 irrigations.…”

“…The findings indicate that maintaining optimal photosynthetic performance during drought and facilitating recovery after re-watering, particularly during the stalk growth stage, play a vital role in determining the final yield of sugarcane. In the future, climate-smart breeding combined with conventional breeding strategies can be employed to develop climate-resilient sugarcane cultivars [43][44][45][46][47].…”
