Genetic differences between broodstock and offspring of seven-band grouper in a hatchery

Abstract: The seven-band grouper (Epinephelus septemfasciatus) is an important fishery resource of a target for prospective aquaculture diversification and maintenance of stock quality is thus important. To explore the sustainability of fry production, genetic variations in 83 sevenband groupers from two broodstock and offspring populations of a hatchery strain were analyzed using 13 polymorphic nuclear microsatellite DNA loci; 133 alleles were identified. Allelic variability ranged from 4 to 18 in the broodstock and fr… Show more

“…Limited effective population size and the effects of artificial selection on hatchery progeny may lead to population genetic drift, which will cause offspring to differentiate from broodstock [3]. Monitoring population genetic diversity and genetic structure, therefore, has become a key aspect and long-term mission for the success of commercial breeding programs [4].…”

“…Seven-band grouper, H. septemfasciatus (Thunberg, 1793), belongs to the family Serranidae and is distributed in waters of Korea, Japan, and China. It is a sedentary, reef-associated species and lives in shallow water (5-30 m) [4]. H. septemfasciatus is a commercially important marine fish with rapid growth and low-temperature tolerance characteristics, which make the species as proliferation fish for cage culture and marine ranching in the coastal waters of Japan, Korea, and China [4][5][6].…”
