Genetic control and chromosomal location of Triticum timopheevii-derived resistance to septoria nodorum blotch in durum wheat

Abstract: The genetic control of resistance, expressed as restricted lesion development in seedling plants, to septoria nodorum blotch of wheat was studied under controlled environmental conditions, using the parental, F1, F2, F3, BC1F1, and BC1F2 generations of crosses of Triticum timopheevii-derived resistant durum lines S3-6, S9-10, and S12-1 with the susceptible durum cv. Sceptre. The seedling resistance of these three resistant sources, derived from T. timopheevii (PI 290518), was monogenically controlled. The chro… Show more

“…Although single genes have been identified in some Triticum accessions (11,20,23,26), resistance in seedlings and adult plants is largely under polygenic control (4,38). Several independent genes control glume and flag leaf resistance (4,14) and their effects are mainly additive in adult plants and seedlings (8,31).…”

“…Inoculum was prepared using a modiWed method of Ma and Hughes (1995). Cultures were grown at room temperature on V8-agar medium (150 ml V8-juice, 15 g agar, 1.5 g CaCO 3 , and 850 ml distilled water) in 10-cm-diameter Petri dishes under continuous illumination provided by 25-W cool-white Xuorescent tubes.…”

“…However, a level of gene-for-gene interaction was demonstrated with selected host genotypes inoculated under controlled environments (Arseniuk et al 1999). Monogenic control of resistance to SNB was described in some wheat materials (Kleijer et al 1977;Ma and Hughes 1995;Murphy et al 2000;Feng et al 2004;Liu et al 2004a;Singh et al 2008). Aguilar et al (2005) described up to 11 QTLs in a population developed from a cross between the winter wheats 'Forno', and 'Oberkulmer' spelt.…”

“…Cytogenetic analyses for Stagonospora glume blotch resistance identified 16 chromosomes in the hexaploid wheat genome contributing to resistance in different lines and populations (Kleijer et al 1977;Dzieglo 1985, 1987;Auriau et al 1988;Nicholson et al 1993;Ma and Hughes 1995;Hu et al 1996). So far, no QTLs for Stagonospora blotch resistance have been reported.…”
