Genetic Characterization of the Tick-Borne Orbiviruses

Abstract: The International Committee for Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) recognizes four species of tick-borne orbiviruses (TBOs): Chenuda virus, Chobar Gorge virus, Wad Medani virus and Great Island virus (genus Orbivirus, family Reoviridae). Nucleotide (nt) and amino acid (aa) sequence comparisons provide a basis for orbivirus detection and classification, however full genome sequence data were only available for the Great Island virus species. We report representative genome-sequences for the three other TBO species (vir… Show more

“…The low amino acid identity of LEAV T13 (Table 2) to other T13 proteins confirms that this virus belongs to a distinct serogroup. VP2 is encoded on segment-2 in LEAV and functionally equivalent to VP3 of MBOV and VP4 of TBOV/TOV [46]. Due to its neutralizing epitopes and role in cell attachment, the VP2 (OC1) protein is subjected to intense selective pressures by the host's immune responses.…”

“…Camels are the main hosts of the adults even though they can parasitize other domestic animals [10]. H. dromedarii is a cosmopolitan species since it's widely distributed in North Africa, the northern regions of West, Central, and East Africa, the Far and Middle East as well as South Asia [4,6,11,12]. H. schulzei has shown more limited geographical distribution to Asia and Egypt than H. dromedarii.…”

“…Dengue disease is a public health problem that continues to affect approximately 100 countries globally with an estimated 390 million cases per year of which majority are children. The burden of disease lies mostly in the Asia-Pacific yet the number of affected countries continues to rise as it emerges into new areas putting more people at risk [ 1 ]. Trans-ovarial transmission of dengue virus (DENV) within mosquito populations can facilitate transmission between or within epidemics, thus complicating disease control strategies [ 2 , 3 ].…”
