Since June 2015, a highly pathogenic disease occurred in duck flocks in China, causing pericardial effusion, enlarged discoloured liver, renal enlargement and haemorrhagic lung with a mortality ranging from 5% to 20%. Previous study confirmed that Fowl adenovirus group C (FAdV-C) and some field FAdVs isolates had been identified as causative agents of hydropericardium hepatitis syndrome (HHS) in chickens and geese world widely. In this study, we firstly report the isolation of FAdV-C from ducks with HHS. The two isolates, designated as SDSX and SDJX, were separated from liver samples using 9-day-old SPF chicken embryos and could cause severe cytopathic effects in duck and chicken embryonic kidney cells. The entire ORF sequences of hexon gene of the two isolates were amplified, sequenced and analysed by restriction fragment length polymorphism. Phylogenetic analysis of loop 1 sequences of hexon gene of FAdVs revealed that the two isolates were closely related to FAdV-C isolates, which could cause HHS in chickens. Experimental infection indicated that the isolate was high pathogenicity to 20-day-old ducks. Our study shows that the recently emerged HHS in ducks was caused by FAdV-C and may possess a potential risk to other poultry flocks.

In total, 39 clinical cases of fowl adenoviruses (FAdV) infection in chickens (28 broiler, 7 native, and 4 layer chickens) between 2007 and 2010 in Korea were investigated. The FAdV types 4, 8b, and 11 comprised 18, 9, and 12 clinical cases, respectively. All FAdV type 4 cases showed clinical hydropericardium (HPS) lesions as well as inclusion body hepatitis (IBH), whereas all FAdV types 8b and 11 cases exhibited IBH lesions without HPS. All 3 types were detected in broiler (9-30 d old) and layer chickens (23-112 d old), whereas most native chickens (14-65 d old) were affected only by FAdV type 4. Infectious bursal disease virus and chicken infectious anemia virus were complications in 51.3% of FAdV cases, with mortalities of 55% to <0.1%. Chicken infectious anemia virus was detected in all native chicken cases. These results indicate that preventive measures against FAdV infection and immunosuppressive diseases on poultry farms should be implemented.

Fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs), which belong to the genus Aviadenovirus in the Adenoviridae family, are grouped into ive species named Fowl adenovirus A-E (FAdV-A to FAdV-E) and 12 serotypes (1-11, 8a, 8b) based on genome sequencing and virus neutralisation, respectively. FAdVs are responsible for a wide range of clinical signs, including hydropericardium-hepatitis syndrome (HHS), inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) and gizzard erosion (GE). 1 HHS is primarily caused by the FAdV-4 serotype and causes more than 30 per cent mortality. 2 3 IBH is related to the multiserotype of FAdVs and leads to 10-30 per cent mortality in chickens. Some FAdV-1 strains are responsible for GE. 1 3 Cases of IBH or HHS have been increasing rapidly, resulting in great economic losses worldwide. 3-8 In the present study, we determined the prevalence of FAdV infections in chicken locks in China by serological analysis and characterised the genotypic distribution among the FAdV strains previously reported in China in GenBank database by phylogenetic analysis.
