Genetic Characterization of Fowl Adenoviruses Isolated from Chickens with Hydropericardium Syndrome in Japan

Abstract: ABSTRACT. We genetically characterized fowl adenoviruses (serotype 4 FAdV, FAdV-4) isolated from chickens with hydropericardium syndrome (HPS) in Japan by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method coupled with direct sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis based on the part of the hexon gene that included the L1 region revealed that all FAdV-4 isolates from chickens with HPS in Japan were identical and were distinguished completely from the cluster including FAdV strains from chickens with HPS in India and Pakistan… Show more

“…Egg production is decreased in diseased breeder flocks (Nakamura et al, 1999). HHS was first reported in Angara Goth, Pakistan, which was designated as Angara disease, and has subsequently occurred in broiler flocks in South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, North and South America, Eastern Europe, Japan and South Korea (Khawaja et al, 1988;Al-Sadi et al, 2000;Hess et al, 1999;Mendelson et al, 1995;Jantosovic et al, 1991;Mase et al, 2009;Kim et al, 2008). Cross-neutralization test and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis have been established to distinguish FAdV serotypes (McFerran et al, 1972;Okuda et al, 2006;Takeuchi et al, 1999;Tang et al, 2009).…”

“…An FAdV infection, and especially HPS and IBH, result in substantial economic losses in many countries worldwide due to the sudden and high mortality in young chickens (McFerran and Smyth, 2000;Balamurugan and Kataria, 2004;Hafez, 2011). The IBH cases are associated with some FAdV types (McFerran and Smyth, 2000;Ojkić et al, 2008), while most HPS cases are associated with FAdV type 4 (Toro et al, 1999;Dahiya et al, 2002;McFerran and Adair, 2003;Balamurugan and Kataria, 2004;Mase et al, 2009).…”

“…Cases of IBH or HHS have been increasing rapidly, resulting in great economic losses worldwide 3–8 . In the present study, we determined the prevalence of FAdV infections in chicken flocks in China by serological analysis and characterised the genotypic distribution among the FAdV strains previously reported in China in GenBank database by phylogenetic analysis.…”
