Genetic characterization of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae from a biological industrial wastewater treatment plant in Tunisia with detection of the colistin-resistance mcr-1 gene

Abstract: This study evaluated the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and associated resistance genes, integrons, and plasmid types as well as the genetic relatedness of enterobacterial isolates in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of La Charguia, Tunis City (Tunisia). One-hundred water samples were collected at different points of the sewage treatment process during 2017–2019. Antimicrobial susceptibility was conducted by disc-diffusion method. blaCTX-M, blaTEM and blaSHV genes as well as those enc… Show more

“…Thus, other ecosystems interface with the environment from/to where resistant organisms can be easily acquired or deposited. Nine publications reported on plasmid-mediated COL resistance in 582 isolates from the environment in Africa [ 40 , 61 , 65 71 ]. These studies reported mcr -1 gene-type variants in 66 isolates (51 E .…”

“…However, the presence of bla CTX-M-27 in ST38, as reported in our survey, is less frequent. This association was described in the United States [ 28 ], and also in Tunisian wastewater [ 29 ] and other African countries [ 30 ]. CTX-M-15 is the predominant ESBL described in Tunisia, as also reported in two other phylogroup B1 clones, ST224 and ST1431.…”

“…With the widespread and massive distribution of large quantities of antibiotics, the likelihood of horizontal transfer of resistance genes between pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria is a major problem. A growing awareness of the dangers posed by a post-antibiotic era has led to an increase in work documenting antibiotic resistance in the environment [17,[19][20][21].…”
