Genetic characterization of bluetongue virus serotype 9 isolates from India

Abstract: Recent incursions of bluetongue virus (BTV) into previously naive geographical areas have emphasised the need to better understand virus movement and epidemiology. Several bluetongue virus (BTV) serotypes are known to exist in India, and some serotype viruses have been isolated. However, the complete genome of not a single isolate is available to date. We report the complete genome sequence of one, and partial sequences of three other Indian isolates of BTV-9. Evolutionary relationships with segment-2 and -6 s… Show more

“…In India, 22 serotypes have been recognised on the basis of virus isolation and/or serology (Rao et al, 2016). Presently, 13 serotypes namely, 2,3,4,6,9,10,12,15,16,17,18,21 and 23 were isolated from India especially from southern states (Maan et al, 2012;Rao et al, 2012;Chauhan et al, 2014). Genomic studies of these serotypes exhibit their variation with the standard reference strain (Rao et al, 2016).…”

“…Multiple serotypes of BTV commonly circulate in the same geographical area, and can be isolated from the same flock or even from the same animals. Further, recent reports indicate the incursion of Western topotypes of BTV into India [12,17,18,20,29,31]. Therefore, the identification of circulating serotypes of BTV is important.…”

“…Recently three serotypes (BTV-3, -9, and -21) have been isolated from India [5,17,30,31,37] (http:// www.ainpbt.com/achievement.html). To select different serotypes of BTV for inclusion in polyvalent vaccines, a comprehensive and continuous type-specific sero-prevalence is needed.…”

“…Recently, nucleotide sequences of segments 2 and 5 have been increasingly used for serotyping of BTV isolates (5,6). Based on sequence differences, global isolates of BTV-9 can be grouped into eastern and western topotypes (6,10). Sequences of segments 2 and 5 of Ind-R1/07 virus are similar to those of other BTV-9 viruses from India and Europe.…”
