Genetic basis of penicillin resistance of S. aureus isolated in bovine mastitis

Abstract: BackgroundThe blaZ gene encoding penicillin resistance can be located either chromosomally or on plasmids. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic relationships and to determine the location of the blaZ gene in S. aureus isolated in bovine mastitis in Finland and Sweden.MethodsSeventy-eight β-lactamase positive S. aureus isolates from bovine mastitis (34 from Finland and 44 from Sweden) were included in the study. The localization of blaZ gene was determined by Southern blotting. The blaZ genes of… Show more

“…In fact, the largest pulsotype in this study, pulsotype U was susceptible to penicillin, an indication that penicillin resistance was pulsotype dependent. Interestingly, a link between penicillin susceptibility and pulsotypes has been reported (Bagcigil et al 2012). A multi-resistance phenotype was observed in 2 (2·5%) isolates.…”

“…Both blaZ and tetK were highly prevalent in S. epidermidis , whereas msrA was common in S. arlettae, S. cohnii , and S. equorum . These genes have been detected in NAS isolated from dairy cows (Bagcigil et al, 2012 ; Li et al, 2015 ; Bochniarz et al, 2016 ). Their dissemination undermines therapeutic options, since β-lactams, macrolides and tetracyclines are among the most commonly used antimicrobials in Canadian dairy herds (Saini et al, 2012a ).…”

“…Mastitis-causing streptococcal species have remained susceptible to benzylpenicillin (Pitkälä et al, 2004;Hendriksen et al, 2008;Bengtsson et al, 2009;Kalmus et al, 2011). Staphylococcus aureus and CNS isolated from bovine mastitis have developed resistance to penicillin (Hendriksen et al, 2008;Bagcigil et al, 2012), which may significantly influence the efficacy of treatment (Pyörälä and Pyörälä 1998;Sol et al;Taponen et al, 2003b). In our study, 6 of 8 cases of mastitis caused by penicillin-susceptible Staph.…”
