Coat colour is one of the most important economic traits of sheep and is mainly used for breed identification and characterization. This trait is determined by the biochemical function, availability and distribution of phaeomelanin and eumelanin pigments. In our study, we conducted a genome-wide association study to identify candidate genes and genetic variants associated with coat colour in 75 Chinese Tan sheep using the ovine 600K SNP BeadChip. Accordingly, we identified two significant SNPs (rs409651063 at 14.232 Mb and rs408511664 at 14.228 Mb) associated with coat colour in the MC1R gene on chromosome 14 with −log10(P) = 2.47E-14 and 1.00E-13, respectively. The consequence of rs409651063 was a missense variant (g.14231948 G>A) that caused an amino acid change (Asp105Asn); however, the second SNP (rs408511664) was a synonymous substitution and is an upstream variant (g.14228343G>A). Moreover, our PCR analysis revealed that the genotype of white sheep was exclusively homozygous (GG), whereas the genotypes of black-head sheep were mainly heterozygous (GA). Interestingly, allele-specific expression analysis (using the missense variant for the skin cDNA samples from black-head sheep) revealed that only the G allele was expressed in the skin covered with white hair, while both the G and A alleles were expressed in the skin covered with black hair. This finding indicated that the missense mutation that we identified is probably responsible for white coat colour in Tan sheep. Furthermore, qPCR analysis of MC1R mRNA level in the skin samples was significantly higher in black-head than white sheep and very significantly higher in GA than GG individuals. Taken together, these results help to elucidate the genetic mechanism underlying coat colour variation in Chinese indigenous sheep.

Actualmente la raza ovina criolla argentina ocupa un lugar destacado en la producción ganadera nacional, siendo la segunda raza en número de ejemplares luego de la Merino. En la provincia de Catamarca es el recurso ovino más importante, por su producción de carne y lana. Se ha intentado principalmente a partir de políticas públicas (subsidios, entrega gratuita de sementales etc.) de sustituirla por otras razas especializadas, sin considerar su verdadero potencial productivo. El noroeste de Catamarca es una región donde el clima es árido semiárido con grandes amplitudes térmicas, escasas precipitaciones, gran radiación solar y frecuentes vientos desecantes, donde sólo es posible sostener una producción animal racional utilizando recursos genéticos animales adaptados a esas condiciones ambientales. El objetivo es estudiar algunas características morfológicas y la calidad de la lana de los ovinos criollos del noroeste catamarqueño. Identificamos diez majadas, sobre las Cuencas del Río Santa María (CRSM) y del Río Agua Amarilla (CRAA). Se muestrearon en total cincuenta y siete (57) ovejas adultas determinando las variables: Peso (PC), Condición Corporal (CC), Tipo de vellón (TV), Tipo de Capa (TC), Color de la lana (CL), Diámetro Medio de Fibra (DM), Curvatura de Ondulación (CO) y Factor de Confort (FC). Los resultados revelaron diferencias en PC y CC entre Cuencas siendo mayor en CRSM. En cuanto a las variables que identifican la calidad de la lana no se observaron diferencias entre las medias de ambas Cuencas. En CRSM, el DM fue de 27.56 micrones y en la CRAA de 28.02 micrones, encontrándose un ejemplar con un DM de 20.97 micrones en la majada de Chiñoacán. La raza ovina criolla en el noroeste catamarqueño revela cierta heterogeneidad morfológica que facilita su interacción con el ambiente y al mismo tiempo produce lana de calidad que puede utilizarse para la confección de variados productos.
