“…pAD1 per se proved to be a member of a widely disseminated family of conjugative, cytolysin-encoding plasmids, especially those associated with opportunistic enterococcal infections in humans. 42,[61][62][63][64] Interestingly, pAD1 was essentially indistinguishable from the pAMγ1 plasmid of strain DS5 discussed earlier in reference 42. The cytolysin activity of pAD1 was soon found to enhance pathogenicity in animal infection models, and S. faecalis strains associated with human parenteral infections were found more likely to be hemolytic than fecal isolates.…”
