Genetic and Phylogenetic Analyses of Influenza A H1N1pdm Virus in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract: Fatal and oseltamivir-resistant isolates had impaired growth and a small plaque phenotype compared to oseltamivir-sensitive and consensus strains. Although these strains might not be fit enough to spread in the entire population, molecular surveillance proved to be essential to monitor resistance and viral dynamics in our country.

“…This dominance of circulation of clade 7 viruses throughout the pandemic period and the disappearance of all other clades was observed in other studies in the United Kingdom, Argentina, India and in the United States of America (Baillie et al, 2012;Barrero et al, 2011;Mullick et al, 2011;Nelson et al, 2011). While clade 7 viruses have dominated globally, they have also been the most diverse and their genetic diversity may have arisen from reassortment among clades considering that they co-circulated with all the other clades.…”

“…The very-high-resolution tracking of individual lineages is achievable only with full genome sequences. Coupled with spatial information, we show that detailed insight into transmission chains and epidemiology becomes apparent, extending what can be observed by use of sequences alone (1,14,21).…”

“…For example, the selection of minority variants with a deletion in the neuraminidase (NA) gene that allows the adaptation of avian influenza viruses from waterfowl to domestic poultry [77], suggests a high frequency of mixed infections and genetic reassortment within these viruses [78, 79, 85]. Other studies described the prevalence and spread patterns of different human influenza viruses in specific geographic areas, based not only on the hemagglutinin (HA) and NA genes but by analyzing all viral segments [8689]. …”
