Genetic and cytogenetic localisation of the homeo box containing genes on mouse chromosome 6 and human chromosome 7.

Abstract: Probes from the m6 homeo box cluster were mapped to mouse chromosome 6 by somatic cell genetics, in situ hybridisation, and by a Mus spretus‐‐Mus musculus backcross mapping system. In addition, the testis‐specific homeo box containing cDNA, clone, HBT‐1, has been mapped using the same back‐cross system and the B X D recombinant inbred strain set. Close genetic and physical linkage between the m6 cluster and HBT‐1 was demonstrated, positioning these sequences to the same local cluster of homeo box containing ge… Show more

“…Hd results in single-digit feet and greatly reduced forelimbs and hindlimbs in heterozygotes and death in homozygotes (21). Our results, together with those of Bucan et al (6), are consistent with the hypothesis that one or both mutations lie within the Hox-J complex. ADDENDUM IN PROOF Two Hox-1.7 transcripts have been cloned from a guinea pig kidney cDNA library.…”

“…Since F9 cells are nullipotent and thus restricted in their differentiation pathway (Strickland and Mahdavi, 1978;Hogan et al, 1983), mouse embryos were investigated at various stages of development. Specifically, using Northern analyses transient expression of Hox 1.1, Hox 1.2 (Colberg-Poley et al, 1985a,b), Hox 1.3 (M.Fibi, B.Zink, M.Kessel, A.M.Colberg-Poley and P.Gruss, in preparation), Hox 1.4 (Wolgemuth et al, 1986;Rubin et al, 1986;Duboule et al, 1986), Hox 1.5 , Hox 2.1, Hox 2.2 Jackson et al, 1985;Hauser et al, 1985;Krumlauf et al, 1987), and Hox 3.1 (Breier et al, 1986;Awgulewitsch et al, 1986) Hart et al, 1985;Awgulewitsch et al, 1986;Jackson et al, 1985;Krumlauf et al,1987). Recent work with Hox 1.5 also showed expression at day 7.5 and later in spinal cord and mesonephric kidney (Gaunt et al, 1986), as well as in spermatocytes and spermatids of adult male animals (Wolgemuth et al, 1986;Rubin et al, 1986).…”

“…The majority of mammalian genes containing homeo boxes are most closely related to the Antp family. These genes, of which > 18 have been identified, are situated in three major clusters in the mouse genome localized on chromosome 6 (Hox-1) (Colberg-Poley et al 1985;Bucan et al 1986;Baron et al 1987), 11 (Hox-2) Joyner et al 1985;Rabin et al 1985;Munke et al 1986;Meijlink et al 1987), and 15 (Hox-3) (Awgulewitsch et al 1986;Rabin et al 1986;Breier et al 1988), with several others scattered throughout the genome (Hox-4, Hox-5, and Hox-6) {Lonai et al 1987;Featherstone et al 1988;Sharpe et al 1988). Two unlinked genes that map to chromosomes 1 and 5 in the mouse contain homeo boxes homologous to the Drosophila en family Joyner and Martin 1987).…”
