Genetic analysis of resistance and virulence characteristics of clinical multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis isolates

Abstract: ObjectiveProteus mirabilis is the one of most important pathogens of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. mirabilis severely limits antibiotic treatments, which poses a public health risk. This study aims to investigate the resistance characteristics and virulence potential for a collection of P. mirabilis clinical isolates. Methods and resultsAntibiotic susceptibility testing revealed fourteen MDR strains, which showed high resistance to most β-lactams and… Show more

“…In fact, this uropathogen has been shown to have a great ability to form biofilm and is involved in the encrustation and blockage of UCs-a common complication in patients with long-term indwelling urinary catheterization-and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in CA-UTIs [124,129]. Numerous adhesins, including MR/PM fimbriae, MR/KH, PM fimbriae, urethroepithelial adhesin (UCA), and ambient-temperature fimbriae (ATF) have been associated to P. mirabilis adhesion onto UCs and biofilm formation during CA-UTIs [126,203,[209][210][211].…”
