Genetic Algorithm Development for Prediction of Modified Langmuir Isotherm Parameters of Asphaltene Adsorption onto Metal Surfaces: Using Novel Quartz Crystal Nanobalance

Abstract: Asphaltene deposition is a common problem in production operation; these problems cause obstruction through pore throats, production tubing, and also surface facilities. In this article, adsorption of asphaltene, obtained from a crude oil sample from Iranian southern oil fields, onto metal surfaces has been extensively investigated. The metal surfaces are aluminum, iron, and copper. The amount of adsorbed asphaltene was successfully measured with a novel method named as quartz crystal nanobalance. To model the… Show more

“…The model parameters summarized in Table were obtained by minimizing the average square deviations between the experimental data and the model. The coefficient of determination, R 2 , suggests that the data are better fit by Langmuir model, which entails monolayer adsorption. It should be noted that values of the coefficient of determination, R 2 , are very low for the Freundlich isotherm fitting, as opposed to Langmuir fit, which was always high, >0.96. Accordingly, Langmuir isotherm was assumed.…”

“…A reference solution was prepared containing asphaltene in toluene at a concentration of 1500 mg/L. The reference solution was diluted with toluene to make other solutions at concentrations of 100 to 1000 mg/L …”

“…Plugging wellbore, contamination of transport tubes, production of a stabilized oil–water emulsion, and deactivation of the catalyst are the major effects that cause asphaltene damage. , In the structure of asphaltenes, there are several functional groups, such as carboxyl, pyridine, thiophene, sulfide, and pyrrole. These types of functional groups cause the adsorption of asphaltenes on diverse surfaces . Adsorption of asphaltenes on different dry mineral surfaces such as metals and metal oxide are mentioned in the literary works. According to these reports, the adsorption behavior of the monolayer and multilayer was revealed to rely on the solvent and asphaltenes source.…”

“…Asphaltene is definitely found in crude oil and must be eliminated during the processing stages of crude oil. Asphaltene problems can considerably decrease well profitability, resulting in problematic operational problems, reducing production and increasing the costs of oil production (Mohammadi et al 2015).…”
