Genesis and mobility of the H 2 O-CO 2 fluid phase during regional greenschist and epidote amphibolite facies metamorphism: a petrological and stable isotope study in the Scottish Dalradian

Abstract: During high-pressure, low-temperature greenschist and epidote-amphibolite facies metamorphism in Dalradian rocks of the SW Scottish Highlands, mineral assemblages in metabasites and calcareous metasediments were dominantly controlled by infiltration of hydrous fluids; consequently, mineral assemblages capable of buffering the fluid phase composition were rare. Equilibrium prograde H 2 O-CO 2 fluids usually contained less or much less than about 1–2 mol% CO … Show more

“…The low-moderate salinity, CO2-bearing fluid is typical of many metamorphic fluids in rocks of similar metamorphic grade around the world (Roedder 1984;Craw 1987). The CO 2 content (generally about 4 mole %) is very similar to that predicted for the peak Dalradian metamorphic fluid by Graham et al (1983). Hence a metamorphic source for the fluid is assumed.…”

“…Polyphase deformation was accompanied by greenschist-to upper amphibolite-facies metamorphism with local anatexis (Harte 1988;Stephenson & Gould 1995), during which temperatures ranged from c. 400 to 600 8C (e.g. Graham et al 1983;Beddoe-Stephens 1990;Skelton et al 1995).…”

“…The Dalradian rocks that host the base-metal sulphide deposits in this study have undergone regional metamorphism to the greenschist metamorphic facies. Regional metamorphism, which was accompanied by intense folding, reached temperatures and pressures of approximately 540 C and 9 kbar during Caledonian deformation (Graham et al 1983).…”
