Current archaeological paradigm proposes that the first peopling of the Americas does not exceed the Last Glacial Maximum period. In this context, the acceptance of the anthropogenic character of the earliest stone artefacts generally rests on the presence of projectile points considered no more as typocentric but as typognomonic, since it allows, by itself, to certify the human character of the other associated artefacts. In other words, without this presence, nothing is certain. Archaeological research at Piauí (Brazil) attests to a Pleistocene human presence between 41 and 14 cal kyr BP, without any record of lithic projectile points. Here, we report the discovery and interpretation of an unusual stone artefact in the Vale da Pedra Furada site, in a context dating back to 24 cal kyr BP. The knapping stigmata and macroscopic use-wear traces reveal a conception centred on the configuration of double bevels and the production in the same specimen of at least two successive artefacts with probably different functions. This piece unambiguously presents an anthropic character and reveals a technical novelty during the Pleistocene occupation of South America.

Parenti ( 2001) e Parenti et al (2018) comparam os vestígios de Pedra Furada com objetos encontrados em pontos de forte fragmentação natural das pedras, ao pé de cachoeiras intermitentes, nos arredores do abrigo. A observação de critérios como a quantidade de negativos de retiradas e a posição dos mesmos evidenciou uma clara diferença entre os conjuntos naturais e os vestígios de Pedra Furada.…”

Resumo A área da Serra da Capivara (Piauí, Brasil) é famosa na comunidade arqueológica internacional, principalmente pela polêmica ao redor do sítio Pedra Furada e de suas datas do Pleistoceno superior, fazendo dele um dos sítios mais antigosdas Américas. Os dados oriundos deste sítio contribuem indiscutivelmente nas discussões e nos conhecimentos sobre os processos de povoamento do continente. Por outro lado, a concentração das atenções sobre ele e sobre os debatesprovocados ofuscaram numerosas pesquisas nesse local que forneceram uma impressionante quantidade de dados sobre as primeiras ocupações humanas nas mais variadas áreas de conhecimento. No presente artigo, a partir de umarevisão bibliográfica, sintetizamos os resultados dessas pesquisas quanto aos contextos e aos comportamentos dos grupos humanos que ocuparam a região durante o final do Pleistoceno superior e o Holoceno inicial. Mostramos, assim, comoa pré-história da Serra da Capivara dialoga com os grandes temas sobre o povoamento do continente americano e traz uma contribuição relevante sobre essas questões, nas escalas macrorregionais e continentais

“…In the surroundings of the Serra da Capivara (southeastern Piauí state), three lagoas , in particular, have yielded a huge amount of mammal fossils: São Vitor, Pomba and Porcos (Figure 1b). In this area, archaeological research started in the late seventies at the sandstone rock‐shelters of Pedra Furada (Guidon & Delibrias, 1986) and Sítio do Meio (Guidon & Andreatta, 1980) and yielded lithic artefacts and archaeological structures in Late Pleistocene deposits (Boëda et al, 2016; Parenti, 2001), which have been the object of controversy (Meltzer et al, 1994; reply in Parenti et al, 1996; Fiedel, 2017, reply in Parenti et al, 2018). The low environment pH of these sites did not allow for the conservation of bones older than the Holocene.…”

Northeastern Brazil has thousands of wetland fossiliferous deposits with megafauna and, in some cases, associated lithic artifacts. The timing of the arrival of humans in South America and the extinction of megafauna is still debated and these sites contribute both to this discussion and to the reconstruction of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene paleoenvironment. Lagoa do Quari, 40 km south of São Raimundo Nonato, Piauí state, is a marsh deposit in the present semiarid caatinga environment, excavated by an interdisciplinary team in 2002–2003. This paper presents the archaeological, palaeontological, geological, chronological, stratigraphical and palynological results and their implications for the Quaternary of northeastern Brazil. The site has a rich megafaunal bonebed at the bottom, dominated by Eremotherium giant sloth remains with poor biodiversity, and a sandy‐silty deposit at the top; two 14C dates constrain this latter layer to 9,944–9,557 and 6,308–6,177 cal. years BP and the associated rich lithic industry of quartz and chert shows a technical continuity throughout the Holocene in the region. Palynology describes an open landscape with periodic wet phases, which could explain the richness of the archaeological occurrences in Holocenic Brazilian prehistory. This study offers a model of interdisciplinary enquiry into the paleoenvironment and prehistory of lowland South America.
