“…In northernmost Finland, the prevalence varies from 25 to 60% among the Finnish Sami population ( 10 ). Remarkably, in subjects of mixed ethnicity, a lower prevalence is detected in the native ethnic groups ( 4 ).…”

“…More stomach symptoms among the Sami were found after consuming milk, suggesting a higher prevalence of milk intolerance among the Sami than the majority population (33). Other studies among Sami in Finland and Russia confirm the higher prevalence of lactose intolerance compared to the majority populations (34,35). Moreover, a study based on SAMINOR data reported a higher prevalence of angina pectoris (heart cramp) among the Sami compared to the non-Sami (36).…”

“…As there are apparent changes in disease risk among Sami, understanding what role diet plays in this change in risk is important for any public healthbased attempts to prevent an increase in lifestyle-related diseases that have afflicted other Indigenous populations (15)(16)(17)(18). Diet may play an important role in the risk of disease among Sami, as they have adapted to a diet high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrate as part of their traditional lifestyle of hunting and reindeer herding (2,(19)(20)(21). Diet and the risk of disease among Sami has been recently reviewed (22).…”
