Genes associated with cognitive performance in the Morris water maze: an RNA-seq study

Abstract: Learning and memory are among higher-order cognitive functions that are based on numerous molecular processes including changes in the expression of genes. To identify genes associated with learning and memory formation, here, we used the RNA-seq (high-throughput mRNA sequencing) technology to compare hippocampal transcriptomes between mice with high and low Morris water maze (MWM) cognitive performance. We identified 88 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 24 differentially alternatively spliced transcri… Show more

“…We have selected hippocampus as it is the specific brain region critical for learning and memory process, and known to have significant association with the neuropsychiatric behavioral changes by various studies. Other previous studies had also extracted RNA from hippocampal tissue to examine the RNA changes in neurobehavioral insults and changes in cognition and memory 47 , 48 . After scopolamine treatment, mice showed decreased expression patterns of cholinergic genes ( Chrnb3 , Chrnb4 , Chat , Camk2b , Slc18a3 , Chrm1 ) compared to the vehicle, although statistical significances were lacking.…”

“…Sv2b has been shown to be involved in the regulation of synaptic vesicle exocytosis and plays a role in neuronal excitability (Stout et al, 2019). Caln1 participates in the regulation of trans-synaptic signaling (Reshetnikov et al, 2020). Functional enrichment analysis identified KEGG pathways including "GABAergic synapse," "neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction," "glutamatergic synapse," "cAMP signaling pathway," "synaptic vesicle cycle" and "long-term potentiation" related to brain cognition.…”
