Generic phylogeny and character evolution in Urticeae (Urticaceae) inferred from nuclear and plastid DNA regions

Abstract: This study examines phylogenetic relationships among the 12 genera of Urticeae (Urticaceae) and investigates the pattern of morphological evolution based on analysis of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and two plastid DNA regions (rbcL exon, trnL-F spacer). Sequence data were analyzed using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference, and selected morphological traits were mapped onto the molecular tree. The molecular results strongly supported monophyly of Urticeae, excluding Gyrotaenia, whi… Show more

“…Four clades are recovered within Urticaceae, congruent with Wu et al (), which correspond to Urticeae, Elatostemateae, the Boehmerieae–Forsskaoleeae–Parietarieae clade, and the “Cecropieae” clade (see Hadiah et al, ; Kim et al, ). Cecropieae are embedded in Urticaceae, and they are polyphyletic, with Poikilospermum nested in Urticeae (BS = 70%; also see Hadiah et al, ; Wu et al ; Kim et al, ). Within Urticeae, Didymodoxa + ( Obetia + Urera – Poikilospermum ) are sister to an unresolved group including Laportea , Dendrocnide , Boehmeria , Urtica , Hesperocnide , and Girardinia (BS = 97%).…”
