“…The ability of some yeasts to produce from glucose polysaccharides which give a blue test with iodine was described by Aschner and associates (1945). The studies reported herein were nearly completed before the appearance of the Lodder and Kreger-van Rij (1952) book, and the writers had come independently to the conclusion that "starch" synthesis rather than capsule production as Almeida and associates (1941) had suggested, or fermentation as suggested by Skinner (1950), probably would be the best single character to separate Cryptococcus from Torulopsis. Personal communication from Lodder had given an indication that she was using this character, and the writers were ready to accept it before the appearance of her book.…”

“…Just as in many species, Candida is the rough form of Cryptococcus which is admitted to be derived from the perfect genus Saccharomyces, at least as far as the fermenting species are concerned (20), so is the pellicle producing Candida Krusei the somewhat more dissociated form of Mycoderma cerevisiae, which is likewise derived from the perfect genus Pichia or Hansenula. This very close connection between Mycoderma and Candida Krusei has been clearly pointed out (10, I1).…”

“…2) Whether Cryptococcus or Torulopsis (or both generic names) is valid is a question that is still undecided, and both names are in current use (20). in any of several separate isolates, and LANGERON and WICKERHAM, in personal communications, also say that they are in no way convinced that Cryptococcus pulcherrimus produces ascospores, and interpret ROBERTS' findings differently than she did.…”

“…C. laurentii was first identified from palm wine in the Congo by Kufferath in 1920 as Torula laurentii [6] . This isolate was then reclassified as Torulopsis laurentii [7] and renamed in 1950 as Cryptococcus laurentii (CBS 139) [8] . Later in Japan, an isolate with identical phenotypic characteristics was described as Torula flavescens [9] , reclassified in 1922 as Torulopsis flavescens [7] , and then renamed as Cryptococcus flavescens (CBS 942) [8] .…”
