This article analyzes the experiences of multiracial women of African descent in Catalonia, Spain—looking at their identity processes, social relations, experiences of racialization and discrimination, and strategies of resistance—using a novel qualitative research method called “Relief Maps,” a very useful tool for the study of social inequalities from an intersectional and multilocational perspective. Relief Maps are a data collection tool and a means of visualizing and analyzing data—providing a graphical representation of interviewee narratives that discuss processes of social inclusion and exclusion. The maps represent three dimensions of experience: (1) psychological (indicating the respondent’s level of discomfort or well-being); (2) geographical (including at least five physical or experiential locations: e.g., home, street, work, school); and (3) social (examining seven social variables or aspects of identity: i.e., gender, ethnicity/skin color, age, sexual orientation, social class, physical appearance, and religion). In this way, the maps show where greater or lesser well-being or discomfort is experienced by the respondent based on each aspect of identity, thus indicating personal places of oppression, places of controversial intersections, neutral places, and places of relief. We argue that this supplementary investigative technique is highly relevant to research in the social sciences, particularly in the field of mixed-race, critical race, and ethnic studies, as it provides an intersectional, reflective, nuanced, and contextual lens for understanding complex social phenomena, leading to information of greater analytical strength.

Este artículo presenta una aproximación cualitativa a las trayectorias e inquietudes que mueven a la juventud a participar y asociarse en entornos urbanos. Las políticas de promoción de la participación juvenil han acostumbrado a desarrollarse sin tener en cuenta la diversidad de inquietudes políticas y sociales de la juventud ni el contexto asociativo del entorno. El estudio de caso del distrito de Sant Martí de Barcelona, y concretamente de su contexto asociativo en el periodo 2011-2019, permite identificar cuatro tipologías de colectivos juveniles en función de sus inquietudes y edades: grupos informales, asociaciones con proyecto comunitario, plataformas reivindicativas y coordinadoras de entidades. Estas tipologías se distinguen por los márgenes de edad de los jóvenes y por sus inquietudes grupales más “finalistas” o más “instrumentales” en función de la edad. Estos resultados permiten comprender las trayectorias de articulación del asociacionismo y su relación con las instituciones públicas.

This article provides an analysis of the perception of fear in nightlife spaces, its relationship with sexual violence and the strategies that young people implement to combat these situations in two provinces of Andalusia (Seville and Granada), Spain. To this end, qualitative research was carried out through in-depth interviews and discussion groups with 73 boys and girls between the ages of 16 and 22. The article asserts that there are gender differences in the spaces of fear. Girls are the ones who experience fear the most when they walk alone, and at specific times – a feeling that is made worse in specific public spaces. The study results show that girls’ fear is associated with sexual assault and boys’ fear with robberies or fights. Results show that three main types of strategies are used in the face of these fears: avoidance, confronting risks and empowerment. All these strategies include the use of new communication technologies. This article seeks to provide a theoretical contribution to enhancing a gender perspective in the field of urban geography.
