How I See Me—A Meta-Analysis Investigating the Association Between Identities and Pro-environmental Behaviour

Prolific research suggests identity associates with pro-environmental behaviours (PEBs) that are individual and/or group focused. Individual PEB is personally driven, self-reliant, and are conducted on one's own (e.g., home recycling). Group focused PEB is other people-reliant and completed as part of a group (e.g., attending meetings of an environmental organisation). A wide range of identities have been related to PEBs. For example, a recent systematic qualitative review revealed 99 different types of identities studied in a PEB context. Most studies were correlational, few had an experimental design. However, the relationships between all these identities and PEBs have so far not been tested quantitatively with meta-analytical techniques. As such, a clear overview of this field is currently lacking. Due to the diverse nature of the field, a priori hypotheses were not possible and relatively broad definitions of identity had to be used to encompass all types of identities and the diverse meanings of identity that have been included in PEB research. What prior theory did allow for was to assess the distinction between two main types of identity, namely how people label, describe, and recognise oneself individually (individual identity), or as part of a group (group identity). Our overall goal was thus to assess the current state of knowledge on identities and PEBs. In 104 studies using a meta-regression following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines, our random-effects meta-analysis showed that the overall concept of identity associated with PEB with a medium Pearson's r (Aim 1). Furthermore, we found that individual identities associated more strongly with PEBs than group identities (Aim 2). The associations between individual and group identities were stronger when the identity and PEB were from the same category (e.g., when both were group-focused; Aim 3). Methodologically, the findings revealed that group identities and group PEBs were most strongly associated for self-reported rather than observed PEBs (Aim 4). Overall identity associated most strongly with group PEBs in the field rather than in the lab (Aim 5) and in student- rather than non-student samples (Aim 6). We discuss the theoretical and practical implications.

Background The goal of user-centered design (UCD) is to understand the users’ perspective and to use that knowledge to shape more effective solutions. The UCD approach provides insight into users’ needs and requirements and thereby improves the design of the developed services. However, involving users in the development process does not guarantee that feedback from different subgroups of users will shape the development in ways that will make the solutions more useful for the entire target user population. Objective The aim of this study was to describe a protocol for systematic analysis and prioritization of feedback from user subgroups in the usability testing of a digital motivation support for fall-preventive physical activity (PA) interventions in seniors (aged 65 years and older). This protocol can help researchers and developers to systematically exploit feedback from relevant user subgroups in UCD. Methods Gender, PA level, and level of technology experience have been identified in the literature to influence users’ experience and use of digital support systems for fall-preventive PA interventions in seniors. These 3 key user characteristics were dichotomized and used to define 8 (ie, 23) possible user subgroups. The presented method enables systematic tracking of the user subgroups’ contributions in iterative development. The method comprises (1) compilation of difficulties and deficiencies in the digital applications identified in usability testing, (2) clustering of the identified difficulties and deficiencies, and (3) prioritization of deficiencies to be rectified. Tracking user subgroup representation in the user feedback ensures that the development process is prioritized according to the needs of different subgroups. Mainly qualitative data collection methods are used. Results A protocol was developed to ensure that feedback from users representing all possible variants of 3 selected key user characteristics (gender, PA level, and level of technology experience) is considered in the iterative usability testing of a digital support for seniors’ PA. The method was applied in iterative usability testing of two digital applications during spring/summer 2018. Results from the study on the users’ experiences and the iterative modification of the digital applications are expected to be published during 2021. Conclusions Methods for systematic collection, analysis, and prioritization of feedback from user subgroups might be particularly important in heterogenous user groups (eg, seniors). This study can contribute to identifying and improving the understanding of potential differences between user subgroups of seniors in their use and experiences of digital support for fall-preventive PA interventions. This knowledge may be relevant for developing digital support systems that are appropriate, useful, and attractive to users and for enabling the design of digital support systems that target specific user subgroups (ie, tailoring of the support). Background: Indigenous youth worldwide are at greater risk of developing mental health concerns due to ongoing inequity and disadvantage. Digital mental health solutions are identified as a potential approach to improving access to mental health treatment for Indigenous youth, with evidence of acceptability and effectiveness beginning to emerge. Although collaborative design, development and evaluation is widely recognised as necessary to improving the acceptability of these tools, there is limited evidence to guide engagement of Indigenous youth in these processes. The objective of this scoping review is to map evidence regarding the collaborative involvement of Indigenous youth in the design and/or evaluation of digital mental health interventions. Methods: Scoping review methodology includes six stages, 1) identifying research question; 2) identifying relevant studies; 3) developing a study selection and data extraction method; 4) charting the data; 5) collating, summarising and reporting results. Additionally, Step 6) consultation, engages a male and female Indigenous health researcher in reviewing protocols, analysis and findings, enhancing credibility and ensuring findings are informed by Indigenous worldviews. Searches for relevant literature are undertaken in the following databases: EBSCOhost databases (Academic Search Premiere, Computer and Applied Science complete, CINAHL Plus with Full text, MEDLINE with full text, APA PsychArticles, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences collection, APA PsychInfo), PubMed, and Scopus. In addition, Infomit and Google (limited to the first 200 results) are searched for grey literature. All primary studies and grey literature in English that meet eligibility criteria are included. Data, including; study methods, methodologies, digital mental health program details, participant information and engagement and reporting processes are extracted and included for analysis. Data extraction variables are guided by the Consolidated Criteria for Strengthening Reporting of Health Research (CONSIDER statement). This statement provides a best practice checklist for reporting research involving Indigenous peoples. This scoping review protocol has been registered with Open Science Framework (available via osf.io/2nkc6).Discussion: To date, there are no reviews which critically analyse engagement of Indigenous youth in the development and evaluation of youth-specific digital mental health interventions. This review will aim to fill that gap and appraise alignment of current practice with best practice guidelines to inform future research. It will highlight appropriate strategies for the engagement of youth in collaborative processes, providing guidance for health practitioners, policy makers, and researchers working in the field of Indigenous youth and digital mental health.
