Generative Artificial Intelligence: Trends and Prospects

Abstract: Generative modeling is an artificial intelligence (AI) technique that generates synthetic artifacts by analyzing training examples; learning their patterns and distribution; and then creating realistic facsimiles. Generative AI (GAI) uses generative modeling and advances in deep learning (DL) to produce diverse content at scale by utilizing existing media such as text, graphics, audio, and video. 1,2 While mainly used in research settings, GAI is entering various domains and everyday scenarios. “…As both problem domains refine each other's problem definition, the broader loop between them is a dialectic development toward a more systemic understanding of AI governance, driven by both large-scale societal problems and more concrete organizational problems. New generations of AI technologies, such as generative AI in chatbots such as ChatGPT [6], necessitate this continuous loop because they introduce new ethical issues, such as the effective spreading of misinformation in the case of generative AI [64].…”

“…In contrast, a broader definition conceptualizes AI as a moving frontier of computational advancements that references human intelligence [5]. Recently, these advancements have been visible, for example, in generative AI technologies such as large language models (LLMs) that are used in the ChatGPT chatbot [6]. AI can thus be seen as a research field, a set of technologies, and a more abstract frontier of technological advancement that is always on the horizon.…”

“…Generative AI refers to systems that generate new content or data, rather than just processing or analysing existing data. These systems can learn from a set of data and then generate new content similar in style or meaning to the input data (Jovanovic & Campbell, 2022). One example of generative AI is a machine learning model trained on a large dataset of images.…”

“…Generative AI is an AI technique aimed at generating new, original content by learning data distribution patterns (Jovanovic & Campbell, 2022). NLP technology, crucial to Generative AI, offers the capability to understand and produce natural language text, facilitating its engagement with human language, and enabling machines to analyze and comprehend human language (Tunca et al, 2023).…”
