Generation of thorium ions by laser ablation and inductively coupled plasma techniques for optical nuclear spectroscopy

Abstract: Single-and double-charged 232 Th and 229 Th ions were produced by laser ablation of solid-state thorium compounds and by inductively coupled plasma techniques with mass-spectrometry analysis from liquid solutions of thorium. The latter method was found to be more applicable for producing ions of radioactive 229 Th for laser experiments when searching for the energy value of the isomeric nuclear transition.

“…The table lists the data on the rela tive concentrations of silicon (substrate and oxide layer), carbon, oxygen, and thorium atoms in the deposited films calculated from the intensities of the Si2p, С1s, О1s, and Th4f 7/2 XPS lines by Eq. (1) according to the method proposed in [11], as well as the positions of the lines.…”

“…In the main approach thorium ions are generated by laser ablation from a solid 229 Th target. The method was successfully applied for loading of thorium ( 229 Th or 232 Th) ions into Paul traps at the Georgia Institute of Technology [56][57][58]69,278,279,334], at PTB [132,221,344,422,423], at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MePhI) [37,41,379] at a collaboration of different institutes in Mainz [109,341] and most recently at Griffith University in Brisbane [264].…”

“…Alternative approaches that have been investigated are inductively coupled plasma techniques [379], electron-beam evaporation [380,383] and the extraction of ions from a 233 U source [266,397,399]. The production of thorium ions by laser ablation has the advantages that it is simple and does not require a helium buffer-gas environment.…”
