Generation of red drum(Sciaenops ocellatus)hematology Reference Intervals with a focus on identified outliers

Abstract: RIs in many wild fish species are lacking, and therefore, this study provides valuable baseline data on healthy red drum fish. The outliers assessed using ASVCP RI guidelines can provide valuable clinical information regarding individuals in population health assessments, which may be more sensitive for the detection of abnormalities than for population statistics comparing the mean. The importance of removing outliers and rerunning RI statistics is highlighted by this field example.

“…Clinically normal Tomato Clownfish have some immature RBCs in circulation. This is consistent with other teleost species, as it is normal to see low numbers of immature RBCs and even RBC precursors in circulation (Dawson 1933; Sandnes et al 1988; Hrubec et al 2000; Tripathi et al 2004; Harr et al 2018). The observation of minimal nuclear dysplasia in erythrocytes of clinically normal Tomato and Saddleback clownfish suggests that this is consistent with a normal morphological finding, similar to reports for other teleost species (Watson et al 1963; Glomski et al 1992).…”

“…Outliers are an important consideration in this process. For instance, Harr et al (2018) used two statistical methods to detect hematological effects that were likely caused by oil exposure in Red Drum Sciaenops ocellatus to emphasize the importance of removing outliers and re‐running reference interval statistics.…”

“…In the rehabilitated animals, the inclusion criteria were more stringent. It is possible that animals in either group were in fact not completely healthy, and so outlying results were eliminated in case they represented clinical pathology changes relating to a diseased state ( 29 ).…”

“…In order to minimize inclusion of potentially unhealthy subjects, specific criteria were defined in order to exclude potentially unhealthy subjects (see Materials and methods). Our examination and exclusion of outliers from the reference population warranted our inclusion of samples from the last four decades despite accelerating rates of environmental change and habitat perturbation in the Arctic (Harr et al , 2018).…”
