Generation of Paired Photons with Controllable Waveforms

Abstract: We describe experiments and theory showing the generation of counterpropagating paired photons with coherence times of about 50 ns and waveforms that are controllable at a rudimentary level. Using cw lasers, electromagnetically induced transparency and cold 87Rb atoms we generate paired photons into opposing single-mode optical fibers at a rate of approximately 12 000 pairs per second.

“…These include decay of the doubly excited states in semiconductors (Edamatsu et al, 2004;Stevenson et al, 2007), four-wave mixing in optical fibers (Garay-Palmett et al, 2007 or cold atomic gases (Balić et al, 2005;Cho et al, 2014). Here, we focus on the oldest and most established method for their production -parametric downconversion (PDC) in birefringent crystals (Kwiat et al, 1995;Wu et al, 1986).…”

“…The DLCZ protocol introduced a number of novel ideas for quantum information processing and is the subject of active investigation. In this direction, nonclassical correlations [17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24] and entanglement [25] have been observed between pairs of photons emitted by a single atomic ensemble. Observations of coherence between two cylindrical volumes of cold Rubidium atoms within a single magneto-optical trap have also been reported [26], although entanglement was not demonstrated between the two regions [27,28].…”

“…[11] and references therein. It was not until recently that such a scheme was implemented in continuous mode in an efficient way in both the low [12,13,14] and the high [15,16] intensity regimes, where it was shown to generate twin beams where quantum correlations are not masked by competing effects.…”
