Generation of nondiffracting Bessel beams by use of a spatial light modulator

Abstract: A laser beam with phase singularities is an interesting object to study in optics and may have important applications in guiding atoms and molecules. We explore the characteristics of a singularity in a nondiffracting Bessel beam experimentally by use of a programmable spatial light modulator with 64-level phase holograms. The diffraction efficiency with 64-level phase holograms is greatly improved in comparison with that obtained with a binary grating. The experiments show that the size and deflection angle o… Show more

“…Spatial light modulators ͑SLMs͒, which are dynamically reconfigurable, have been used to generate Bessel beams. 13,14 The kinoforms displayed on the SLM provide a phase transformation equivalent to the passage of the beam through an axicon. The algorithm for their calculation is straightforward and can be varied in real time.…”

“…This dependence allows control occurring transformation in the crystal due to changes of the characteristics in either Bessel beam or crystal. In particular, the spatial frequency of the beam depends on the numerical aperture of the axicon [19][20][21][22] which shapes the beam, also it is possible to adjust characteristics of the beam by changing the beam divergence [23]. To change the parameters of the crystal, it can be heated [24] or effected by electro-optic [25].…”

“…We then compare our experimental results with numerical simulations. Finally, we look at the transverse energy flow of the beam and relate it to its self-healing property. We generate the HCOBs using a spatial light modulator (SLM) [18,19]. Figure 1(a) shows the experimental setup.…”
