Generation of high precision DEMs of the Wadden Sea with airborne interferometric SAR

Abstract: This paper describes how high-precision DEMs are obtained over the Wadden Sea using the AeS-1 airborne interferometric radar. The Wadden Sea is an intertidal zone along the coast which has height variations less than 5 m over 30 km and is free of vegetation. The resulting DEM has a grid spacing of 2.5 m and an absolute height accuracy of 5 cm rms, as verified by theodolite measurements. The paper describes the radar system, the processing techniques, the test area, the results, and the verification procedure.£… Show more

“…In order to monitor morphodynamic changes of bottom topography, different methods for DEM generation have already been analyzed (Hoja 2000;Niedermeier et al 2000;Wimmer et al 2000). One approach is the socalled waterline extraction by image analysis.…”

“…In our case, the antenna PhC positions were accurately measured in anechoic chamber [32], with an accuracy on the order of 0.1 mm [33]. The lever arms were measured just before the beginning of the flight mission by using the laser ray of an Electronic Distance Meter (EDM) integrated within a Total Station Theodolite (TST), which guarantees an accuracy of 0.5 mm [33].…”

“…However, tidal flats have been considered economically unimportant areas in the past, and knowledge of their past topography is limited by the poor accessibility and significant temporal dynamics of the tidal flats, technical and financial limitations and indifference. It is impossible to retrieve the tidal flat topography of the past few years or even decades by using ground surveys, ship-based echo-sounding, airborne stereo-photogrammetry, airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) or airborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar (INSAR) [4][5][6][7].…”
