Generation of 3D ellipsoidal laser beams by means of a profiled volume chirped Bragg grating

Abstract: A method for shaping photocathode laser driver pulses into 3D ellipsoidal form has been proposed and implemented. The key idea of the method is to use a chirped Bragg grating recorded within the ellipsoid volume and absent outside it. If a beam with constant (within the grating reflection band) spectral density and uniform (within the grating aperture) cross-section is incident on such a grating, the reflected beam will be a 3D ellipsoid in space and time. 3D ellipsoidal beams were obtained in experiment for t… Show more

“…The analysis is performed for the following laser pulse parameters: central wavelength λ = 1.034 µm, full width at half maximum (FWHM) ∆λ FWHM = 8 nm, and FTL duration τ F = 198 fs. These parameters correspond to the output pulses at the front end of the laser system [36] that is planned to be used for the irradiation of photocathodes at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAP RAS), and are close to those described in the section 3. We determine the FWHM duration of the linearly chirped laser pulse, τ, and the time difference between the 90% and 10% intensity levels, δτ.…”

“…We present here an extension of the recently demonstrated laser pulse shaping method [35][36][37][38][39] to triangular laser pulses suitable for the extraction of picosecond triangular electron bunches from a photoinjector. The pulse shaping method is based on spectral amplitude shaping of linearly chirped laser pulses using SLMs.…”

“…A new, very promising method for 3DESP generation with potentially perfect axial symmetry was proposed in [11]. A specially profiled chirped volume bragg grating (CVBG) was used, where the 3D bunch shape was encoded into the volume of the photorefractive glass chip, thus providing spatialfrequency coupling.…”

“…Our technique is peculiar for the linear relationship between the spectral and the temporal pulse intensity distributions, which is achieved by the large linear chirping of the input pulse. This assumption was tested experimentally in [5]. A single-mode fiber output of the shaping scheme ensures the uniformity of the temporal profile across the beam cross-section.…”
