Generation Mean Analysis using Six Parameters Genetic Model for Quantitative Traits in Cowpea [(Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.]

Abstract: Generation mean analysis study in cowpea was undertaken to estimate the gene action operating in the inheritance of yield and its components using six basic generations viz. P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 of two different crosses namely PGCP-63 X Pant Lobia-1 and Pant Lobia-3 x Pant Lobia-1 were studied. For most of the studied traits, additive, dominant, additive x additive, additive x dominance and dominance x dominance were significant. Additive effect significantly contributed for number of pods per plant and… Show more

“…On the other hand, the significance of the scaling test for most of the traits further highlighted that the genetics of these traits from interspecific crosses could not be explained through a simple additive dominance model because the epistatic interactions had affected their expression in F2 and backcross generations. Our results for scaling tests were in line with the findings of Singh et al (2000), Pallavi et al (2019) in bottle gourd and cowpea. The analysis of six parameter model further partitioned the main gene effects (additive and dominance) of quantitative traits of both the crosses, SAT × SG 282 and SAT × PSG 9, into various types of gene interactions(Table 4).…”

“…The prevalence of additive, dominance, additive × additive and additive × dominance type of interactions for different traits in SAT × PSG 9 cross suggested the improvement in inbreds through recurrent selection and use of heterosis breeding for better expression in future generations. Similar findings were reported by Lawande and Patil (1990), Singh et al (2000) and Pallavi et al (2019) in bitter gourd, bottle gourd and cowpea.…”

“…Mather and Jinks (1982) gave the six-parameter test with the ability to determine epistatic gene effects (do min an ced om inac e [l], do m inan ce add itive [j ], ad d itivead d itive [i]) fo r q u an titative traits. T h e generation mean analysis in cowpea was conducted by various researchers to estimate the type of gene action (Adeyanju et al, 2012;Sobda, 2018;Gupta et al, 2017;Pallavi et al, 2019).…”
