Generation and Detection of 28 Gbaud Polarization Switched-QPSK in WDM Long-Haul Transmission Systems

Abstract: Abstract-We report on an experimental long-haul transmission of a 28 Gbaud PS-QPSK signal in WDM scenarios. This report presents, to the authors' knowledge, a novel implementation of an optical coherent receiver for the polarization-switched quadrature phase shift keying (PS-QPSK) modulation format, with minor variations on the standard coherent PDM-QPSK receiver. We compare the performance of PS-QPSK with that of PDM-QPSK, over a WDM system based on 100 Gb/s PDM-QPSK and standard single mode fiber (SSMF), and… Show more

“…Three of the bit streams were driven by uncorrelated (delayed) pseudo-random sequences, and the fourth was formed as a parity (exclusive OR, XOR) bit from these three sequences. This transmitter was also used by Renaudier et al [92], who also introduced a timing offset between the two polarizations to facilitate the receiver DSP, as will be discussed in section 2.5.2 below.…”

“…M -SP-QAM According to predictions and simulations in, e.g., [57,59,61,92], the SP-QAM formats emerged as an interesting 4d format generalization with increased spectral efficiency over PM-QPSK. In 2013, 128-SP-QAM was demonstrated by three independent groups [104][105][106].…”

“…A short known header (448 bits) is looked for in the received sample sequence, and then used for an initial rough estimation of the frequency offset, in case of cold acquisition, i.e., at transmission start-up. 3 Once the first frequency estimation is available, it is possible to identify the transmitted symbol sequence and exploit the first transmitted code word to perform a fine frequency estimation (as concerns the simulated system). Both estimation steps are based on the algorithm in [31].…”

“…Another option to achieve a finer granularity is the application of alternative modulation formats in four-dimensional (4D) signal space, which have recently received a lot of attention due to their interesting features. For instance, polarization-switched QPSK (PS-QPSK) was identified as the most power-efficient modulation format [7] in four dimensions and can be derived from PM-QPSK by using Ungerboeck's set-partitioning scheme [8] in four dimensions, where the minimum Euclidean distance between the constellation points is increased by 2 E1.76 dB after one partition [9,10]. Similarly, another popular four dimensional format 128-SP-QAM can be derived from PM-16QAM by set partitioning, i.e., a subset of M¼ 128 points out of 256 are chosen from the PM-16QAM constellation by increasing the minimum Euclidean distance [11].…”
