With the advancement and widespread implementation of multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) wireless communication systems over the last decade, space-time block coding (STBC) identification has become a critical task for intelligent radios. Previous examinations of STBC identification were focused on single-user transmissions over single-carrier and multicarrier systems in combination with uncoded broadcasts. Practical systems, on the other hand, contain many users and employ error-correcting codes. For the first time in literature, this work explores the problem of STBC identification for multi-user uplink transmissions in singlecarrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems. We take another step closer to real systems by addressing asynchronous transmissions and by conducting multi-user channel estimation. We also exploit the outputs of the channel decoder, which is usually used in many practical systems, to improve the identification and estimation processes. The mathematical analysis demonstrates that the maximum-likelihood (ML) solution of STBC identification, channel estimation, and synchronization can be executed by an iterative approach. The space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm is used to separate the overlaid signals arriving at the base-station (BS). The parameters under consideration for each user are then updated using an expectation-maximization (EM) processor. Simulation results show that the proposed architecture outperforms other identification methods published in the literature while maintaining a reasonable level of computational complexity.

In this paper, a novel differential space-time block coded spatial modulation (differential STBC-SM) is proposed for uplink multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MI-MO) communications, which combines the concept of differential coding and STBC-SM to enhance the diversity benefits in the absence of the channel state information (CSI). The transmission structure of the proposed system is on a block basis, where each block contains two sub-blocks. More specifically, the first sub-block only conveys amplitude and phase modulation (APM) symbol bits, since its transmit antennas (TAs) obey a pre-designed activation pattern, which do not carry any information bit. For the second sub-block, the input bits are modulated to STBC-SM matrices, which are then differentially coded between two adjacent sub-blocks. Moreover, a novel block-by-block based non-coherent detector is presented. Finally, we derive an upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP) by using the moment generating function (MGF). Our simulation results show that the proposed differential STBC-SM transmission structure is able to acquire considerable bit error rate (BER) performance improvements compared to both the conventional differential spatial modulation (DSM) and differential Alamouti schemes.

To address the problem of unreliable single-link underwater acoustic communication caused by large signal delays and strong multipath effects in shallow water environments, this paper proposes a distributed underwater acoustic diversity communication system (DUA-DCS). DUA-DCS employs a maneuverable distributed cross-medium buoy network to form multiple distributed, non-coherent, and parallel communication links. In the uplink, a receiving diversity processing mechanism of joint decision feedback equalizer embedded phase-locked loop and maximum signal-to-interference ratio combining (DFE-PLL-MSIRC) is proposed to achieve waveform-level diversity combining of underwater signals. A phase-locked loop module is embedded in each branch of the decision feedback equalizer to eliminate the residual frequency and phase errors after Doppler compensation. Meanwhile, the combining coefficients are determined based on the maximum signal-to-interference ratio criterion, taking into account the residual inter-symbol interference after equalization, resulting in efficient and accurate computation. Additionally, the combined decision values are fed back to the feedback filters in each branch to ensure more accurate feedback output. Simulation and lake experiment results demonstrate that, compared to the single-link communication system, DFE-PLL-MSIRC can achieve a diversity gain of more than 5.2 dB and obtain about 3 dB more diversity gain than the comparison algorithm. And the BER of DFE-PLL-MSIRC can be reduced by at least one order of magnitude, which is lower by at least 0.6 order of magnitude compared to the comparison algorithm. In the downlink, a transmitting diversity processing mechanism of complex orthogonal space-time block coding (COSTBC) is proposed. By utilizing a newly designed generalized complex orthogonal transmission matrix, complete transmission diversity can be achieved at the coding rate of 3/4. Compared to the single-link communication system, the system can achieve a diversity gain of more than 6 dB.
