Generalized Resistance Resources in the Salutogenic Model of Health

Abstract: This chapter presents and discusses theoretical considerations and empirical findings regarding the concepts generalized resistance resources (GRRs) and generalized resistance deficits (GRDs). Recent research findings are presented, showing how these resources or deficits impact sense of coherence (SOC). Suggestions for future research directions (e.g., individuals’ differential susceptibility to environmental effects and eudaimonia/hedonia perspectives) and interventional implications are presented.

“…GRRs are resources used to effectively cope with diverse stressors and can be divided into 3 categories: physical resources (eg, education, status, and economic strength), social resources (eg, interpersonal relationships, supportive environment, and support from people who understand), and psychological resources (eg, stable world view and values). 26 Further, Idan et al 29 notes the need to add new GRRs, such as an individual’s capacity for self-regulation or executive functioning. The S-WLB described here is a resource for self-regulation that is effective in combating stressors and thus can be thought of as a new type of GRR.…”

“…Considering that work today requires, highly qualified and motivated professionals who can deal with the stress and demands and that VET has a social mission to develop skilled workers through school-and work-based learning, the purpose of our study was to identify and explore the importance of SOC and GRRs, both internal and external, among apprentices in VET. Research on the role of GRRs in building SOC remains scarce (Eriksson, 2022), and pedagogy has rarely been encompassed within the salutogenic perspective (Idan et al, 2022;Lindström & Eriksson, 2010). Moreover, there have been calls for studies that apply salutogenesis to fields beyond healthcare (Bauer et al, 2020;Eriksson, 2015).…”

“…According to the Salutogenic model, generalized resistance resources foster an individual’s ability to effectively respond to stress which in turn enhances an individual’s sense of coherence [ 37 , 39 ]. In other words, when chronic generalized resistance resources are integrated into an individual’s life situation, these resistance resources are considered the primary determinants of the strength of the individual’s sense of coherence level [ 40 ].…”

“…As a type of chronic, generalized resistance resources, family SES, is strongly associated with family coping resources. These resources not only denote the materials and strategies within the family that the person can rely on to manage stressful events, but also provide the foundation for the three components (i.e., comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness) of sense of coherence [ 40 , 41 ]. Individuals with higher levels of sense of coherence tend to view stressful events as predictable, explainable, and meaningful [ 38 ].…”
