Generalized pruritus in anorexia nervosa

Abstract: We report a 19-year-old woman with the associated disorders of generalized pruritus, hypertrichosis and anorexia nervosa, all of which had been present for approximately 4 months. Psychotherapy induced both weight gain and resolution of the pruritus. We propose that anorexia-associated pruritus be considered one of the important cutaneous signs in anorexia nervosa.

“…Except for mild asteatosis, all patients had a normal cutaneous examination, and there was no association with serological abnormalities. In this journal, Taniguchi et al 3 reported a single case of anorexia nervosa presenting with generalized pruritus and hypertrichosis. Serological tests of thyroid function were at the lower end of the normal range, suggesting mild subclinical hypothyroidism.…”
