Generalized effective medium resistivity model for low resistivity reservoir

Abstract: With the advancement in oil exploration, producible oil and gas are being found in low resistivity reservoirs, which may otherwise be erroneously thought as water zones from their resistivity. However, the evaluation of low resistivity reservoirs remains difficult from log interpretation. Since low resistivity in hydrocarbon bearing sands can be caused by dispersed clay, laminated shale, conductive matrix grains, microscopic capillary pores and high saline water, a new resistivity model is required for more ac… Show more

“…The gas saturation model introduced in this study offers a novel and distinct application. In forthcoming investigations, it is imperative to assimilate the inherent conductivity characteristics of mudstone. This objective can be achieved by fashioning a bespoke effective medium symmetric conductivity model tailored expressly for elevated mudstone content, as demonstrated by the work of Song and Tang (2008). Subsequently, a comparative assessment can be made with the Sg model, as derived from stress-corrected resistivity.…”

“…To determine the resistivity of the wet clay, the statistical method of data was utilized. Due to the large number of factors in low-resistivity shale that can lead to reduced resistivity in logging, it is not appropriate to select low-resistivity shale to determine the resistivity of wet clay [39]. The shale of well R2 was selected for the wet clay resistivity value, and the organic matter in the Longmaxi Formation shale of this well did not lead to a decrease in log resistivity (Figure 6a).…”

“…Even though, they still lose sight of the influence of shale. For the shale-rich reservoirs, the saturation is calculated with W-S model [4] , D-W model [5] and S-B model or the effective medium conduction model [6][7] . Although these models contain the influence of shale on the conductivity of rock, the influence of the pore structure is rarely considered, and so these models would not describe the conductance mechanism of inequigranular sandstone reservoirs comprehensively.…”
