General synthesis of carbon nanocages and their adsorption of toxic compounds from cigarette smoke

Abstract: Carbon nanocages (CNCs) have been synthesized through a simple approach using different alcohols and ferrous oxalate as reactants at 550 °C for 12 h in a sealed autoclave. The lengths of the sides of the CNCs are about 200-350 nm and the wall thicknesses are about 10-15 nm. The formation mechanism of the CNCs is also discussed, based on the experimental results. These CNCs show excellent removal efficiency for phenolic compounds, ammonia, and total particulate matter from cigarette smoke. The adsorption capabi… Show more

“…carbon nanocages, CNCs), exhibit unique geometrical structure, excellent electrical properties and high thermal stability. Recently, these materials have received much research attention because of their potential application as adsorbents [1], electrode materials [2], catalyst support [3] and supercapacitors [4,5].…”

“…When concerning the removal of toxic chemicals from cigarette smoke, several nanomaterials have served as additives in the conventional cigarette filter for the improvement of removal efficiency. Among them, carbon nanocages are useful for the adsorption of toxic compounds from cigarette smoke [20]; nanostructured titanate can selectively remove nitrosamines from cigarette smoke [21]; carbon nanotubes composite has a significant removal efficiency for benzo[a]pyrene or phenolic compounds from cigarette smoke [22]. Considering the acute toxicity of heavy metals, it is highly desired to develop novel nano-adsorbents as additives in cigarette filter to improve the removal efficiency of heavy metals from cigarette smoke.…”
